Proper Consumption of Red Apples
According to Phan Cong Tuan, a renowned herbalist and Chairman of the Da Nang Herbal Association, red apples, known as ‘dai tao’ in Vietnamese, are considered a superior herb in traditional Eastern medicine. They are safe, non-toxic, and suitable for long-term consumption. Dai tao is typically classified as a qi-tonifying herb in modern Eastern medicine compendia.
There are two common types of apples: red and black. Both are made from ripe, dried fruits of the Ziziphus jujuba plant, belonging to the Rhamnaceae family, mainly cultivated in China. Sun-drying or charcoal/electric oven-drying methods produce the different varieties.
In Eastern medicine, red apples are sweet and warm in nature, boasting benefits such as strengthening the spleen, tonifying qi, nourishing blood, calming the mind, and reducing the harshness of other medicinal herbs in a formula. The recommended dosage is typically 3-5 fruits per serving, which is ideal for daily consumption if used regularly.
Modern studies have revealed that red apples boost immunity, calm the mind, protect the liver, exhibit antioxidant properties, and reduce inflammation. Beyond their medicinal functions, apples are considered nutritious. They are rich in vitamins like C, riboflavin, thiamine, carotenoids, and niacin, as well as trace elements such as catechol, tannin, 13 types of amino acids, and essential minerals like calcium, phosphorous, and iron.

Precautions When Consuming Red Apples
Herbalist Phan Cong Tuan advised that red apples are naturally sweet and high in sugar, so certain individuals should exercise caution. Specifically, those with dental issues, children with ‘cam’ (characterized by a distended abdomen and jaundice), or those with parasites like worms should refrain from excessive consumption. For young children, eating too many apples may lead to tooth decay and uncontrolled weight gain.
Additionally, due to the warming nature of apples, individuals with blood deficiency, high internal body temperatures, or those with a ‘low-heat’ constitution prone to phlegm or qi stagnation should avoid this fruit. Consuming more than 10 apples per day can cause bloating, loss of appetite, menstrual irregularities, and acne breakouts. Therefore, it is essential not to indulge in red apples indiscriminately, especially for children.
