Communities dubbed “Blue Zones,” renowned for their high life expectancy, such as Okinawa in Japan and Loma Linda in California, share notable commonalities, with a healthy diet being the most prominent feature.

These areas boast numerous residents living to their 90s and even surpassing the century mark. Through observation, researchers found that these individuals consistently maintained a balanced and nutrient-rich diet. According to Dr. Sehgal, director of the Center for Peace and Longevity at Yale University, the diets of these long-living people typically comprise whole, unprocessed foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins, reminiscent of the Mediterranean diet.

They tend to consume food in moderate portions, favoring plant-based options that are rich in nutrients beneficial to overall health. “This diet helps prevent chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes, which are critical factors in longevity,” the expert added.

Furthermore, Dr. Sehgal also highlights the eating attitudes of these individuals. They often practice mindful eating, savoring their meals slowly and sharing them with family or friends, which can enhance digestion and overall well-being.

Social connections are another vital factor. Centenarians tend to have strong bonds with their families, friends, and surrounding communities. These connections provide emotional support, reduce anxiety, and foster a sense of belonging and purpose in life. A robust social network enables them to better manage life’s challenges and supports their psychological health.

Long-living individuals often have strong ties with their families, friends, and communities

Sleep is also essential. According to Dr. Paulvin, a specialist in restorative and longevity medicine, a consistent sleep routine and stable circadian rhythm are hallmark characteristics of long-living individuals. “These people typically sleep for at least seven hours each night, promoting brain health and reducing inflammation,” he explained.

Regular physical activity is equally indispensable. “Consistent exercise maintains cardiovascular health and flexibility,” shared Dr. Paulvin, and activities such as swimming, walking, and yoga have proven to enhance quality of life and extend longevity.

Lastly, according to Dr. Paulvin, genetics play a role in longevity. However, this does not mean one should neglect self-care. “Longevity is not a sprint but a marathon,” added Dr. Sehgal. “It’s essential to adopt a balanced, sustainable, and natural lifestyle over the long term.”
