According to doctors, for those who suffer from cold hands and feet during cold weather, most cases are not a cause for concern. Simple measures and keeping the hands and feet warm can help.

“It is true that the feet have a significant impact on body temperature, especially during sleep.

For some reasons, our feet help regulate our body temperature.

Similar to our hands, our feet have a large surface area and unique blood vessels that open up to allow large amounts of blood to flow through, causing them to release heat quickly when needed. When not needed, these blood vessels constrict.

If they get too cold, our feet will activate pain receptors, causing discomfort.

This, coupled with the fact that our hands and feet are at the ends of our limbs and lack muscles (which generate heat), leads to their temperature dropping faster than other parts of the body.

However, by using specific nerves controlled by the body’s thermostat in the brain, we can almost instantly change the temperature of our feet, thereby finely adjusting our body temperature.

As for the notion of ‘warming up instantly when wearing socks’, it is more of a perception than a fact (although in some cases, the feeling can be real).

Warming your feet has clear benefits

If your feet get too cold, they will activate pain receptors, causing discomfort. Therefore, warming your feet can bring clear benefits.

This is also related to the advice to wear a hat when feeling cold. Our head loses a significant amount of heat when we are cold, and it cannot retain heat indefinitely.

Our comfort with the current temperature is also essential.

Wearing a hat is highly effective, both in terms of perception and reality, and it also makes the thermostat less likely to restrict blood flow to the feet, so they stay warmer and more comfortable.”
