One day, a hungry rabbit ventured down from the forest in search of food. He stumbled upon a field of sweet potatoes and began to dig, unaware that the farmer was hiding nearby, watching his every move. The farmer pounced, but the rabbit played dead, lying still as a log.
The farmer turned the rabbit over several times, convinced that he was truly dead. He grabbed the rabbit by the ears and carried him to a nearby tea stall, where he threw him carelessly under a tree. The rabbit remained motionless, even when the farmer went inside for a drink. But as soon as the coast was clear, the rabbit sprang to life and darted away.
Days passed, and the rabbit’s hunger grew. He returned to the same field, digging for sweet potatoes once more. Unfortunately, the farmer was waiting, and this time, the rabbit was caught red-handed. Knowing the rabbit’s trick, the farmer tied him up tightly and took him home.
The farmer instructed his wife, “Prepare a basket, and tomorrow, on the anniversary of my father’s death, we will slaughter this rabbit.”
The rabbit was confined to the basket, with a heavy stone on top to ensure he couldn’t escape. He wriggled and squirmed but to no avail. Just then, he spotted a nearby bucket of water with a large fish swimming inside. The rabbit called out to the fish, “My friend, tomorrow is your last day. It’s the farmer’s anniversary, and they plan to cook you for the celebration! Break free now, or it will be too late.”
Frightened, the fish thrashed about, eventually breaking the bucket into three pieces. Water spread across the ground, and the fish wriggled towards the pond. The rabbit cried out to the farmer, alerting him to the escaping fish. The entire family rushed out, and in their haste, they forgot about the rabbit, grabbing the basket and running to catch the fish.
The rabbit seized the opportunity and darted towards the forest. Soon, he reached a wide river and found himself unable to cross. Just then, a crocodile emerged from the water, its nose poking above the surface. The rabbit smiled and called out, “My dear crocodile, if you give me a ride across the river, I will arrange a marriage between my sister and you. She is the most beautiful rabbit you will ever lay eyes on.”
Intrigued, the crocodile agreed, and the rabbit hopped onto his back. As they approached the opposite shore, the rabbit leaped onto dry land. Before disappearing into the forest, he called out, “Thank you for your help, but my sister has already been promised to another. You have been deceived!”
Enraged, the crocodile vowed revenge. One day, as the rabbit wandered by the riverbank, thirsty and tired, the crocodile spotted him. He piled some grass on his head and swam closer to the shore. The rabbit, mistaking the crocodile for a floating patch of grass, jumped onto his back. But this time, the crocodile had him in his grasp.
The crocodile growled, baring his sharp teeth. The rabbit laughed and said, “Your ‘grrr’ doesn’t scare me at all. It’s your ‘ha ha’ that truly frightens me!” Curious, the crocodile opened his mouth and let out a “ha ha,” only to have the rabbit leap away at that very moment. The rabbit stood on the riverbank, laughing uncontrollably, before continuing on his merry way.
