The Meaning of Sunflowers
Every flower has a unique story and message. While roses symbolize sweet confessions of love, lilies convey the message of “best wishes for a hundred years”. When giving flowers, it is important to choose ones that suit the occasion. So, what does the sunflower mean that makes it a popular gift choice?
Sunflowers carry a multitude of meanings, varying across different cultures. However, the common thread is that sunflowers always signify positivity and goodness.
Longevity and Vigorous Life
In Chinese culture, sunflowers are seen as a symbol of longevity. This heliotropic flower always turns towards the sun, showcasing a vigorous life force, longevity, and a forward-looking attitude. Thus, sunflowers are often gifted on important occasions such as birthdays, grand openings, and celebrations.
Respect and Gratitude
Sunflowers are also considered a flower of respect and gratitude towards loved ones. They are an excellent choice to gift to your grandparents, parents, or mentors on special days like birthdays, Father’s Day, or Mother’s Day.
Optimism, Strength, and a Bright Future
Additionally, sunflowers convey a message of faith, hope, and the pursuit of light and positivity. They are perfect to gift to someone who is feeling discouraged, as they uplift the spirit and bring hope. Recently, sunflowers have been used in campaigns for children with cancer, symbolizing strength and encouragement to overcome their illness.
Devotion and Sincerity
Did you know that sunflowers are at their most beautiful when they are basking in the sun’s rays? Even when they grow in the dark or in places with insufficient sunlight, they always strive to turn towards the sun.
In love, when your heart beats for someone, your mind and soul follow suit. No matter where your loved one goes or how far they wander, your love for them remains unchanged. They are like the sun, warming and illuminating your heart.
Today, I will guide you on how to make a sunflower basket using crepe paper – it’s simple and super cute!
How to Make a Beautiful Sunflower Basket Using Crepe Paper
Method 1
Materials
- Crepe paper (yellow, brown, and green)
- Tissue paper
- Net fabric
- Candy (for the flower center)
- Wire
- Scissors
- Other decorative materials of your choice
Step 1
– First, cut the brown crepe paper into a square and place the candy in the center, wrapping it with the tissue paper and net fabric. Secure it with thread to create the flower center. This method is simple and gives the center a sparkling, eye-catching look.
Step 2
– Cut the yellow crepe paper into a long strip with a width equal to the length of the candy and a length eight to ten times the candy’s circumference.
– Cut fringes along the length of the strip, then place the candy in the middle and roll it up.
Step 3
– Use your fingers to bend and shape the petals outward. Insert the wire through the candy and secure it with wax to create the stem.
– After completing this step, your flower should look like the one in the picture. Repeat these steps to make more flowers.
Step 4
– Decorate the basket with other materials. You can also use green crepe paper to make green roses to attach to the basket – it looks adorable!
– With these simple steps, you can easily create a beautiful and affordable gift. All you need is a bit of creativity and time. This sunflower basket is not only pretty but also meaningful, making it a perfect present for your grandmother, mother, teacher, or even your significant other on special occasions.
Method 2
Materials
– Crepe paper (dark yellow, light yellow, brown, and green)
– Scissors
– Tape
– Wire
– Thread and a small piece of green foam in the shape of a mountain
Instructions:
Step 1
First, cut the crepe paper as follows: For the dark yellow paper, cut a strip with a width of two sections (use the paper’s ridges as a guide) and a length of about 20 cm. For the light yellow paper, cut a strip with a width of 1.2 sections and a length of about 15 cm. Cut the brown paper into a strip long enough to wrap around the mountain-shaped foam.
Cut the crepe paper to the appropriate sizes.
Step 2
Next, use the brown paper to wrap the mountain-shaped foam and secure it with thread. Cut fringes along the length of the dark yellow paper strip, and do the same for the light yellow paper but with smaller and shorter fringes.
Cut fringes for the crepe paper and wrap the brown paper around the foam.
Step 3
Insert the wire into the flower center and wrap it tightly. Then, use the wire to press down on the fringes of the light yellow paper, making half of the fringes curve forward and the other half curve backward. Cut the ends of the dark yellow fringes into a rounded shape to create the petals.
Cut and shape the petals.
Step 4
Now, wrap the light yellow paper around the brown center, starting with the side where the fringes curve inward, and then wrapping the other side.
For the dark yellow paper, use the scissors to curve the edges.
Wrap the paper around the center and shape the petals.
Step 5
Finally, wrap the petals around the outside of the center and secure it with thread. Your sunflower is almost ready!
Cut a piece of green paper to create the flower base and wrap it with green tape. Make sure to completely cover the wire from the base to the stem.

Method 3
Materials
– Crepe paper (yellow, green, and brown)
– Glue
– Scissors and pliers
– Flower wrapping paper
– Ribbon
– Green tape
– Double-sided tape
– Steel wire
Step 1
Create the flower stem using a 40 cm long steel wire. Cut the crepe paper into sections and wrap them around the wire, gluing the paper as you go. Wrap the wire three times with paper to make the stem thicker and proportional to the flower.
Step 2
Create the flower center using brown crepe paper. Cut the paper into long strips and fold them in half (the width should be about 4 cm). Then, fold the paper again to make four layers and cut small slits along the length. Cut only halfway through the paper.
After cutting the paper, you should have four strips. Wrap them around the top of the stem, gluing them as you go.
Step 3
Make the petals using yellow crepe paper. Take an 8 cm wide strip of paper and fold it in half. Cut the paper to create the petal shape.
Open the paper and use the scissors to curve the edges naturally. Wrap the paper around the flower center, gluing it as you go. You will need two strips of petals for each flower.
Step 4
Create the flower base using green crepe paper. Follow the same process as making the petals, but cut the paper to create a pointed shape. Use your fingers to curve the paper and twist the tip of the base.
Once the base is done, wrap it around the bottom of the petals. Gather the base at the bottom and secure it with green tape.
Step 5
Make the leaves using green crepe paper. Attach double-sided tape to half of the paper and place the wire on top.
Fold the paper in half to stick the two sides together, then fold it again and cut it to create the leaf shape. Attach the leaf to the stem using green tape.
Step 6
Arrange the flowers into a bouquet and decorate. Once you’ve made about seven flowers (or more, depending on your preference), use green tape to secure them together. Then, wrap the bouquet with flower wrapping paper.
Tie a ribbon around the bouquet to add a cute touch. At this step, you can also choose to display the flowers in a vase instead of making a bouquet.
