Killing flies by swatting them will only cause them to release millions of viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungal cells, worm eggs, and maggots from their bodies. Therefore, it is best not to swat flies. So, what’s the best way to deal with these pesky insects?
It’s advisable to deter flies from entering your home by hanging a water-filled bag in front of a window or your front door, especially where sunlight shines through. It is recommended to use a clear and sturdy plastic bag to prevent tearing when hung. Adding approximately four to five coins to the water bag can also help keep flies at bay.
Why does hanging a water-filled bag in front of a window or in a sunny area deter flies? This is due to the compound eyes of flies, which enable them to see in almost all directions, resulting in constant changes in their viewing angles.
When sunlight passes through the water-filled bag, it refracts, causing the light to bend rather than travel in a straight path. This refraction disorients flies, causing them to fly erratically and stay away from the area where the plastic bag is hung, thus avoiding places near the water-filled bag.
Some effective fly-trapping and repelling methods
– Using ripe bananas or apple cider vinegar
For this method, peel and slice a ripe banana into small pieces and place them in a bowl. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Poke tiny holes in the plastic wrap to allow the scent of the banana to escape and attract flies. Flies will enter the bowl but won’t be able to escape. Alternatively, you can use a solution of apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap, which is also very effective.
– Using orange or lemon peels
Place fresh orange or lemon peels in areas where flies frequently appear. Not only do these peels emit a pleasant fragrance that can relax your mind, but they are also excellent at repelling flies and mosquitoes. Flies will be scared away by the scent and won’t dare to come near.
– Using black peppercorns, milk, and sugar
Combine three teaspoons of black peppercorns, a quarter liter of fresh milk, and one teaspoon of sugar in a small saucepan. Heat the mixture over low heat for 5 to 10 minutes, then let it cool. Pour the mixture into a bowl. The aroma will attract flies, and they will be eliminated when they consume this liquid.
Additionally, to prevent flies from entering your home, maintain a clean living space, and ensure all garbage bins and compost bins are covered. Regularly dispose of garbage to deny flies a hiding place. You may also consider growing herbs like rosemary, mint, and basil, which are known to repel flies.
