1. Clean the front-loading washing machine
Most modern front-loading washing machines have a self-cleaning program for the drum. However, if your machine doesn’t have one, choose a wash program that uses hot water to clean the washing machine. Then add some detergent to remove stains faster and remember not to put clothes in until the washing machine has completed the washing process.
Use a sponge or paper towel to clean underneath and around the rubber cushioned edges on the washing machine lid as this area is prone to mold growth due to moisture.
Clean the detergent and fabric softener trays with a sponge soaked in detergent or vinegar. Make sure they are free of dirt or hair.
2. Clean the top-loading washing machine
First, turn on the hot wash cycle of the washing machine and turn it off after the water is filled. If your washing machine doesn’t have one, boil water separately and pour it directly into the machine, using about 3 to 5 liters of water.
Add a little bleach and turn on the wash cycle to mix the bleach with the water. Then turn off the machine and leave the mixture inside the machine for a few hours to remove dirt, mold, and other harmful substances. If you prefer, you can use vinegar instead of bleach.
After waiting, let the machine complete its washing cycle. If the machine still smells like bleach after the wash cycle is complete, pour hot water mixed with vinegar into the machine, leave it for an hour, and run the wash cycle again. This will eliminate any bleach smell.
Clean the detergent and fabric softener trays using vinegar. Make sure they are free of dirt, hair, or other harmful substances.
3. Keep the washing machine clean
Do not leave wet clothes in the machine for more than a few hours as this can lead to mold formation and a bad smell. Remove the clothes to dry immediately or use the drying function after the wash cycle is complete.
Close the washing machine door immediately after washing will create a moist environment, perfect for mold growth. Leave the washing machine door open after the wash cycle is complete to allow the remaining water to evaporate.
Ensure the detergent and fabric softener trays are dry. Take them out to dry or wipe them dry before putting them back into the machine.
Regularly maintain and clean the machine once a month using the methods mentioned above to keep your washing machine clean and odor-free. This will also help prolong the lifespan of your washing machine.
