Fire disasters do not only occur in factories and workshops but also pose a great danger right in your own home – your living space. They can easily come from everyday habits or seemingly ordinary items and devices such as electrical short circuits, cooking, worshiping, using scented candles, charging phones, electric bikes, motorcycles…
Many fire hazards are right in your own home
If a fire is detected early and handled promptly, following the correct procedures, it can help minimize the damage. On the contrary, if the fire is detected and handled slowly or not properly, it can spread, escalate, and cause terrible consequences in terms of property damage, or even worse, loss of human life.
If a fire is detected early, it can limit damages to people and property
To ensure safety for yourself, your family, and those around you, everyone needs to equip themselves with the basic knowledge of how to handle fire incidents.
The Ministry of Public Security’s electronic portal provides the following recommendations on how to handle fires caused by electrical equipment in each household:
Step 1 – Alert, notify everyone about the fire
When a fire incident occurs, alert others by shouting or using other alarm devices such as bells, loudspeakers, public address systems, or pressing fire alarm buttons to inform everyone in the area where the fire is happening. This allows people to coordinate in extinguishing the fire or evacuate safely when the fire has already spread.
Step 2 – Cut off the electricity in the area where the fire is occurring
Cutting off the electricity in the area where the fire is occurring is essential to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas. This action also ensures the safety of those spraying fire extinguishing agents by preventing the risk of electric shock, thus protecting their health and lives.
Step 3 – Use firefighting equipment to extinguish the fire
– When a fire is detected, quickly move to the area to access firefighting equipment such as portable fire extinguishers, fire blankets… Take and operate them to extinguish the fire. In addition, fixed firefighting equipment such as wall-mounted fire hydrants (if available) can be deployed to extinguish the fire.
– If the fire is seen as having the potential to escalate and the current equipment is unable to extinguish the fire, evacuate the area and quickly call the police, firefighting, and rescue forces at 114.
Step 4 – Call 114 to report the fire and request assistance from the police, firefighting, and rescue forces
Quickly call 114 to inform the police, firefighting, and rescue forces that a fire is happening. When making the call, please note the following:
– Dialing method: The caller can use a mobile phone or a landline phone to call for help. Dial the phone number (area code + 114) or directly dial 114.
– Information: Provide specific and clear information such as the address where the fire is occurring, the type of building that is on fire (high-rise building, apartment building…), and a preliminary assessment of the scale of the fire. Especially, provide information if there are any casualties in the fire.
