Lately, there has been a surge in phone scams. Sometimes, if you happen to answer a call from an unknown number, the money in your account could vanish. To avoid falling victim to these scams, here are some calls you should hang up on immediately.

Calls from people who accidentally transferred money to your card

When a stranger suddenly calls you, claiming they transferred money to your card by mistake. When you check your account balance or a message from the bank informing you of an excess amount, the caller asks you to transfer the money back to them immediately. Assuming it’s genuine, you transfer the money to the caller. A while later, another person asks you to transfer money to them, and that’s when you realize you’ve wired the money to a fraudster.

Hang up immediately if you receive these 3 types of calls to avoid losing all your money.

In another scenario, about a month later, you will receive calls from multiple lending companies, because the money wasn’t transferred by mistake at all; the caller used your personal information to apply for a loan on your behalf.

When you realize you’ve been scammed and have to repay the money to the lending company, so when someone asks you to transfer money, always verify the details thoroughly. Never blindly transfer money.

Calls from people pretending to be police officers

The Ministry of Public Security reported that they have received numerous complaints from citizens accusing individuals of impersonating police officers and making threatening phone calls to extort money.

It’s noteworthy that despite issuing multiple warnings and extensive media coverage on how to prevent this type of crime, some people are still falling prey to scammers, losing billions of VND.

According to the Hanoi City Police Department, these criminals use sophisticated software to hide their phone numbers, making them appear as official police numbers, and then inform the victim that they are involved in a case under investigation.

The scammers provide details that match the victim’s personal and financial information, and they make threats or even stage a scenario where the victim can see or speak to someone posing as a police officer, making the victim believe they are legitimate. The criminals then instruct the victim to transfer money to their designated accounts and demand that they keep the matter confidential to facilitate the investigation.

Therefore, if you receive any phone calls claiming to be from police investigating a case, you should immediately visit the nearest police station to report it. Additionally, avoid sharing your personal information on social media, e-commerce websites, or when shopping at stores.

Also, do not comply with requests from strangers to download and install apps or share personal information, bank account details, etc. This helps prevent criminals from exploiting your personal information to scam you.

Calls from fake online sellers

If you shop online, there are people who will pretend to be sellers and call you, claiming there is an issue with a product you recently purchased and that it cannot be shipped at the moment, or they may need to transfer money for some reason.

They may send you a link, and if you accidentally click on it, your mobile phone information could be stolen. If you happen to enter your bank card password, your bank account could be emptied.
