Baking soda is one of those powerful “allies” for your life that can easily be overlooked. They can clean your house, disinfect food, and even play an important role in aesthetics. Besides, baking soda also helps you take care of your garden in the best way. Let’s explore all the useful information about this mineral in protecting your plants and gardens.
1. Baking soda against fungi
Baking soda combined with soap and water can help prevent fungal infectio n in some types of crops, shrubs, and fruit trees. Just spray the solution on the plants to stop the spread.
You should note that we are talking about a natural product, the effects of which may take longer to notice compared to using chemicals. Observe the reaction of each plant to spray the appropriate dosage, avoiding spraying too much that can kill the plants.
2. Baking soda reduces the presence of aphids
Aphids are one of those tiny creatures that we certainly don’t want in our garden. Aphids love to eat soft-stemmed plants. In the process, they secrete a sticky substance that attracts ants and causes black mold to appear. This mold greatly affects the photosynthesis process of the plants. When this happens, new sprouts are deformed and the plants gradually weaken. By spraying baking soda combined with soap, we have a good chance of deterring these insects.
3. Repel ants
Baking soda combined with soap and lime water can reduce the presence of ants. They will no longer find your garden or fruit trees appealing to invade.
4. Can be useful for testing soil quality
Experts know that healthy soil is soil that is neither too acidic nor too alkaline because the closer the pH of the soil is to neutral, the healthier and disease-resistant the crops will be. To know what type of soil you have, you just need to follow these steps:
Take purple cabbage, chop it up and pour it into boiling distilled water. Soak it for 10 minutes and then strain it. The resulting purple-colored water has a neutral pH.
Put some cabbage water into 2 separate cups, 1 cup with vinegar (turns to dark pink due to acidity) and the other cup with baking soda (turns to blue or green due to alkalinity).
In the separate cups, put some cabbage water and a spoonful or two of the soil you want to test, wait for 30 minutes. If the water turns pink, the soil is acidic, if the water turns green, the soil is alkaline. If the soil still has a purple color, then the soil is perfect.
5. Baking soda helps you get better compost
Knowing that a neutral pH is best for plants, go ahead and mix compost using all the organic kitchen waste. And make sure to keep the soil well-drained. Remember to check the soil before planting to have a fruitful garden.
