Importance of Improving Reading Speed

Most authors start with an important statement or main information that summarizes the main idea. By reading the first sentences of paragraphs, you can quickly understand the main idea and determine if the document contains the information you’re looking for.
For literary or artistic works, this method is still applicable, but for detailed reading, it’s best to read each word.
The last sentence of a paragraph often contains “new information” about the topic. It either consolidates the reader’s attention to continue reading or provides a connecting piece of information leading to the next paragraph.
After reading the first and last sentences, scan the entire paragraph for nouns and pronouns. This helps in quickly identifying the key points without wasting unnecessary effort on less important words.
Identify the key points in the paragraph that make it stronger. By focusing on these key points, you can get a clearer understanding of the whole context and bypass sentences that don’t contain important information.
Marking and noting important information outside the paragraph helps when you need to revisit or reference the content later. It saves time and facilitates efficient searching and studying.
Reading at an appropriate speed helps maintain focus, alertness, and comfort. Sitting improperly or lying down while reading can cause discomfort and hinder concentration.
Like learning music or a foreign language, improving reading speed requires practice. Practice these methods whenever you have the opportunity, such as reading newspapers or books. Regular practice will make a noticeable difference in reading speed and increase knowledge.
