Thomas Corley, author of the book “Rich Habits: Daily Success Habits of Wealthy Individuals,” has conducted 5 years of research on the lives of the wealthy, those with annual incomes over $160,000 and assets of at least $3.2 million, and the poor, those with annual incomes below $35,000 and assets below $5,000.
He concluded about “rich habits” and “poor habits”, based on the tendencies of individuals within each group. Corley said everyone has a number of rich habits and a number of poor habits. The key here is that over 50% of your habits should be rich habits.
Below are a few of the various different habits of the wealthy and the poor as well as what Thomas Corley has discovered from his research.
1. The rich always keep their goals in sight
“I focus on my goals every day.” 62% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 6% of the poor did.
The wealthy not only have monthly and annual goals, but also put them down on paper, with 67% writing them out.
2. The rich always know what to do today
“I have a to-do list every day.” 81% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 19% of the poor did.
The wealthy not only have a list of things to do, but 67% of them also complete at least 70% of their daily tasks.
3. The rich don’t watch TV
“I watch TV for an hour or less each day.” 67% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 23% of the poor did.
Only 6% of the rich follow popular programs. In contrast, 78% of the poor do. Corley says, “The general idea of the wealthy is to make good use of their time. They don’t avoid watching TV because they have discipline and a higher purpose than others. They just don’t choose TV because they have other daily habits, like reading”.
4. The rich don’t read… for fun
“I love reading.” 86% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 26% of the poor did.
The wealthy enjoy reading, knowing it is a type of book that is not fiction or a self-help book. “The wealthy read books that make them better themselves,” says Corley. 88% of the rich use reading to improve themselves for at least 30 minutes each day, but only 2% of the poor do.
5. The rich also enjoy listening to audiobooks
“I listen to audiobooks when commuting from home to work and vice versa.” 63% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 5% of the poor did.
If you don’t like audiobooks, you can also use your commuting time from home to work for other productive or self-improvement activities.
6. The rich are willing to do more than they’re paid for
“I do more than what is required of my job.” 81% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 17% of the poor did.
86% of the rich say they work 50 hours or more on average each week, while only 43% of the poor do. Additionally, only 6% of the rich say they are unhappy with their job.
7. The rich don’t play the lottery often
“I don’t play the lottery regularly.” Only 6% of the rich agreed with this statement, while up to 77% of the poor did.
This statement does not mean that the rich exclude themselves from the occasional gamble. Corley explains, “Most of those who are wealthy are business owners, and they put their money and their financial risk on the table and accept risks. They don’t gamble irresponsibly.”
8. The rich monitor their weight
“I track the calories I consume every day.” 57% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 5% of the poor did.
The wealthy value their physical health. Corley recalls, “One individual in my group of wealthy is 68 years old and has $78 million in assets. I asked him why he still didn’t retire. He said it was because he knew the final stretch of his career was when he made the most money. If he extended his career another 4-5 years compared to others, he would have an additional $7 million.”
9. The rich take care of their teeth
“I visit the dentist every day.” 62% of the rich agreed with this statement, while only 16% of the poor did.
