Why is it important to regularly check the electricity meter?

Regularly checking the electricity meter allows you to monitor the amount of electricity consumed by your household. This helps you identify any unusual increase or decrease in electricity usage and take appropriate action.

For tenants, knowing how to check the electricity meter is essential to avoid being overcharged by landlords without valid reason.

Moreover, regularly checking the electricity meter allows you to proactively monitor your monthly electricity consumption and find ways to avoid wastage.

Why should the electricity meter be checked regularly

Important parameters to consider before checking the electricity meter

Unit of energy

In Vietnam, the unit of energy is kWh (kilowatt-hour). Your electricity bill will indicate the amount of kWh consumed by your household in a given month. This unit is calculated using the formula:

  • A: Electricity consumption (kWh)
  • P: Power of the device used (W)
  • t: Time (hours)

Number of revolutions of the electricity meter

In Vietnam, the typical value for the number of revolutions per kWh is 450 (indicated as 450rev/kWh). This value may vary for different electricity meters when using a single load.

Accurate steps to check the electricity meter

Follow these steps to accurately check your electricity meter for free:

Step 1: Use a 40W light bulb.

Step 2: Turn off all electrical devices in your home to halt the electricity meter completely.

How to accurately check the electricity meter

Step 3: Turn on the light bulb and measure the time it takes for the electricity meter to complete 10 revolutions.

Step 4: Check the number on the electricity meter. It should indicate 450 revolutions/kWh or 900 revolutions/kWh (usually 450 revolutions/kWh). This number signifies that when the electricity meter completes 450 revolutions, it corresponds to 1kW (1,000W). Therefore, each revolution of the electricity meter represents 2.222W.

How to accurately check the electricity meter

Step 5: Perform the actual observation calculations:

If the electricity meter completes 10 revolutions in 500 seconds, it will complete 72 revolutions in 1 hour (equivalent to 3,600 seconds). This indicates a power consumption of 72 x 2.222W = 160W.

Since the light bulb has a power of 40W, it consumes only 40W of electricity per hour. This shows that the electricity meter runs 4 times faster.
