Colors to Avoid in 2023: Predicted Outdated Paint Trends

Trend forecasts predict that in 2023, muted and gray tones will be replaced with brighter, more vibrant hues. Combinations of saturated colors with warm neutrals and earthy tones have been predicted to be especially popular during this time.

Sue Kim, the Marketing Director of Valspar, stated that although homeowners have diverse preferences and styles, certain colors will not become completely outdated. Instead, colors will become timeless tones, leading trends but still serving as the perfect backdrop.

This year is the perfect time to embrace your personality and live a fulfilling life. When planning renovations or a complete makeover of your home, let these color trends inspire your space.

1. Vibrant Colors

Tash Bradley, the Interior Design Director and Color Expert at Lick, explains that as people tend to express themselves more, they lean towards incorporating more colors into their homes. Customers are now opting for sophisticated colors instead of neutral ones. Bradley says, “Neutral colors now consist of dark brown, beige, pink, or warm white. The color trend is shifting towards warmer earth tones instead of cool gray.”

People are also moving away from muted colors and embracing brighter variations. Bradley believes that “smooth and powerful shades with more personality will be trending in 2023.”

2. Cool Dark Tones

Sue Wadden, the Color Marketing Director of Sherwin-Williams, notes that neutral gray, a popular balanced color, is losing some of its favoritism. There is a shift towards darker tones like brown and deep blue, which are currently emerging in 2023.

Wadden adds, “These darker shades inspire homeowners to try bolder options in their homes. Additionally, these richer and more diverse tones create warmth and depth, adding a sense of formality and mystery to the space.”

3. Pastel Tones

Patrick O’Donnell, the Color Consultant and International Brand Ambassador of Farrow & Ball, mentions that the craving for light pastel colors during the pandemic has influenced design consciousness, but is gradually diminishing. Light and cool shades of blue will be more popular.

Hannah Yeo, the Marketing and Color Development Director at Benjamin Moore, agrees with this view. She states, “Starting from 2023, colors will confidently promote comfort and celebrate the dynamic nature of colors. The focus is no longer on the size or direction of a room, but rather on using color as a creative expression. After years of social distancing, parties and small gatherings are increasing, allowing vibrant and confident colors to create a lively atmosphere in the entertainment space at home.”

4. Gray

Yeo explains that there is a shift towards warmer colors, including gray. While neutral gray is still popular, it has been selling slower in recent years. Warmer neutral colors like light gray and beige are gradually replacing cooler colors.

Sue Kim, the Marketing Director of Valspar, agrees with this perspective. She predicts, “Blue-green has reached its peak along with warm gray tones and colors with a purple hue, offering more trendy options in homes.” She also anticipates warm, foundational, and versatile colors that can “create a light atmosphere with natural contact in the home” will remain popular in 2023.

5. Green

Tash Bradley suggests that since green was highly popular last year, people now desire something different and unique. This is why green-blue or teal will make a strong comeback in 2023. Bradley observes that the combination of blue and green is increasingly favored. Teal appears greener under natural morning light or warm artificial light in the evening, providing a change in the home environment that people enjoy.

If you prefer a darker color, Bradley recommends choosing a deeper teal instead of black, as it offers smoother shades.
