Does the “magical” Energy-saving feature of the Dry mode really conserve electricity as rumored?

Whether it's high-end or outdated, air conditioning products typically have two main modes: Cool and Dry. While Cool directly blows cool air, Dry focuses more on dehumidifying the air in the room.

During the hot summer, on social media forums, netizens begin to share their experiences of using air conditioners to save the most energy. People often pass on the message that when using an air conditioner, it is best to set it to the Dry mode (the water drop symbol on the remote control). Doing so will save 10 times more electricity for the air conditioner.

Accordingly, to set the air conditioner to the Dry mode, when turning on the air conditioner, simply switch from the “Cool” mode (cold air with the snowflake symbol on the control panel) to the water drop symbol. This simple operation will reduce the power consumption of the air conditioner by a significant amount, limiting heat shock because the room temperature will not be lower than 23 degrees Celsius and will not fluctuate significantly with the outside temperature.

It sounds appealing and can be done right away. However, is the truth behind the Dry mode as people are discussing and passing on to each other?

According to experts in electrical appliances, during extremely hot days, it is best to set the air conditioner to the Cool mode to cool the room, and never set it to Dry mode.

The reason is that the Cool mode (mainly for cooling purposes) reduces the room temperature to the desired temperature set on the remote control and maintains that temperature for a long time. At the same time, it also partly controls the humidity in the air-conditioned space.

Meanwhile, the Dry mode (mainly for dehumidifying purposes) removes moisture from the air in the room and maintains the room temperature without exceeding the starting temperature when the dehumidifying mode is activated.

The nature of Dry mode is not cooling; it is simply a water separation process. Therefore, Dry mode should only be used on days when the weather is not too hot and the air humidity is high, which is an excellent choice.

The cooling feature in the Dry mode is only effective in humid weather or during the rainy season. Users feel cooler air because the room’s humidity decreases rather than the air being truly cooled like in the Cool mode.

For example, when set to Dry mode at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and the humidity in the room is high at about 90%, the air conditioner will dehumidify the air until the temperature reaches about 25 degrees Celsius and then stop. When the humidity increases, causing the temperature to rise again, the air conditioner will continue to operate to maintain low humidity.

Since the compressor only operates to condense moisture in the Dry mode, the air conditioner makes less noise and consumes less electricity compared to the Cool mode. However, in extremely hot or low-humidity weather, the Dry mode does not provide significant cooling efficiency. Abusing this mode on hot and dry days can even harm human health such as respiratory diseases, dry skin, cracked hands…

Users should have a humidity gauge in the room.

To be sure whether to use the Dry mode or not, users should have a humidity monitor in the room. If the humidity is above 70%, this mode can be used. In case it is below 60%, the air conditioner should be set to the normal cooling mode (Cool) combined with using a humidifier or placing a small water container in the room.

Experts confirm that setting the air conditioner to the Cool mode will make the room cooler than setting it to Dry mode. Therefore, if users want a cool room, they should set the air conditioner to the Cool mode for the most effective operation.
