Sticky and Hard Candy
Firstly, sticky candy can stick around your braces and damage them. Secondly, and most importantly, the candy will stick to your teeth and stay there, increasing the risk of tooth decay as it works underneath your braces and makes cleaning your teeth more difficult.
Hard Nuts
Hard nuts are a combination of the two worst things for people with braces; they are hard and small. They can break the hooks on the braces and create plaque buildup underneath the brackets that is difficult to clean.
Popcorn
Seemingly harmless, this food is actually one of the worst things you can eat if you have braces. It will get stuck and embed into your gums in hard-to-reach places. This can lead to having to remove the braces to get them out.
Hard Tacos
Hard tacos can scrape against the brackets of your braces and dislodge them. Remember, they are only attached to your teeth with an adhesive. Although the adhesive is generally strong enough to withstand most foods, particularly hard foods can pull them off.
Chewing Gum
This one is even worse than popcorn; chewing gum is completely off-limits for anyone with braces. Why? Chewing gum can bend the wires between the brackets. This can be so subtle that you don’t notice it – meaning your teeth are being pushed in the wrong direction and can lead to longer braces wearing time to reverse the damage caused by chewing gum.
Ice
Chewing ice is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to a cracked tooth and braces, with the risk of a crack occurring underneath the bracket and going unnoticed until the wires are removed, or the tooth breaks altogether.
Carbonated Drinks
The combination of acid and sugar attacks the teeth, gums, and causes tooth decay. Some sodas have even been known to weaken the adhesive that keeps the brackets in place on your teeth.
Hard Cookies
Once again, eating something as hard as a cookie means you risk breaking a bracket, or worse, your teeth not being able to handle the pressure of biting while being constrained and crack or break.
Corn
Accidentally biting into a kernel when you are eating corn can be a disaster for braces, causing them to become loose or the wires to break. Plus, anything you bite with your front teeth carries a risk with braces, and no one wants yellow chunks stuck to the wires in the front of their mouth.
Hard Cereals
Cereals like cornflakes mean you risk damaging your braces or the wire dislodging and causing the braces to be pushed away from their intended shape.
