There’s nothing quite like enjoying a delicious dish of homegrown bean sprouts! Here’s a simple guide on how to grow your own bean sprouts using a plastic basket. With this method, your sprouts may even turn out plumper and rounder than those bought from the market. Let’s get started!
1 Ingredients and Materials:
- About 200g of mung beans (choose seeds that are not damaged or infested, and ensure they are thoroughly dried)
- A plastic basket (make sure it has holes for drainage)
- A piece of cloth or mesh with a diameter similar to the basket
- Banana leaves
- Water
- A pot or pan
2 Simple Steps to Grow Bean Sprouts with Banana Leaves:
Step 1: Soak the mung beans in water for 2-3 hours. After soaking, drain the water and set the beans aside.
Step 2: Tear the banana leaves into small pieces and line the bottom of the basket with a thick layer.
Step 3: Spread the soaked mung beans evenly over the layer of banana leaves.
Step 4: Cover the beans with another thick layer of banana leaves to shield them from direct sunlight.
You can also use a lid to ensure it’s properly covered.
Step 5: Place a bowl or plate on top to secure the setup.
Next, place the basket on a pot or pan that has a small amount of water at the bottom. Cover the entire setup, including the pot, with black plastic to block out sunlight completely.
Step 6: Each day, remove the basket and soak it in a basin of water for about 5 minutes. Then, drain the water and re-cover the setup (as in Step 5). Repeat this process once a day for 3 consecutive days.
After 3 days, you’ll have a basket full of plump and fresh bean sprouts, ready to be used in your favorite recipes!
