Doing laundry is a daily task for every family, whether you wash by hand or with the “help” of a washing machine, you should know the following tips to clean and properly care for your family’s clothes.
1. Leather

When washing a leather jacket, first use warm water to thoroughly clean any dirt stains on the jacket, then use a brush dipped in soapy water to lightly brush it, then use clean water to rinse, and finally hang the jacket in a shady and cool place to dry. After the jacket is dry, you can apply a little leather conditioner to it. Note that when washing leather garments, do not use gasoline to wash or bleach them in the sun, or dry them with fire.
2. Velvet

Hang your clothes in a well-ventilated area to dry, then shake off the dust that easily sticks to the outside. After that, spread it on a smooth surface with a single blanket or a thin mat, cover it with a clean damp cloth, and use an iron to press it evenly. The dust will be carried away by the steam and stick to the damp cloth. Iron and wash the cloth at the same time until the clothes are completely clean, then wash the cloth.
Alternatively, lay the clothes flat on a table, cover them with a soft moist fabric, and gently tap the fabric with a small wooden stick or a small piece of wood. At that time, the dirt that is knocked off will stick to the soft moist fabric on top, wash the fabric with clean water, and then cover it and continue tapping. After 2-3 times like this, your clothes will be as clean as desired.
3. Velvet

If there are stains on the fabric, before washing, soak it in cold water, then use a soft brush to scrub it with laundry detergent or washing powder several times, scrub it clean, then rinse with cold water, gently squeeze out the water, do not squeeze too hard as the fabric will wrinkle when dry. You can also soak it in cold water.
If there are oil stains, use pure gasoline to clean it, then wash it with cold water. Do not use boiling water or soap with high alkalinity to wash this type of fabric. It is best to wash it with clean water 3 times, and for the second wash, you can add 2-3 drops of vinegar to neutralize the remaining detergent on the clothes, so that the clothes will not have the smell of detergent.
After washing, when draining the water, do not twist or wring the fabric too hard, gently press it instead. At the same time, do not directly expose it to strong sunlight or dry it with a machine or an electric iron, but rather hang it in a cool and well-ventilated place.
When dry, lightly tap the clothes with a small wooden stick to restore their original flatness and prevent them from wrinkling. When storing them in a box or wardrobe, you should also include two moisture-absorbing sachets, but avoid using mothballs. And during storage, you should regularly take them out and hang them in a shady and well-ventilated place to prevent moisture and keep the clothes in good condition.
It is worth noting that clothes made of velvet should not be machine washed, as velvet fibers do not withstand friction. Using a washing machine will quickly fade, wear out, and reduce its insulation properties.
4. Silk

– Sort and wash silk clothes separately to avoid color fading. Soak the silk clothes in warm water with some mild soap for a maximum of 5 minutes. Make sure the water is at the right temperature. Hot water (cold water) can cause the silk fabric to stretch (or contract).
– Apply a small amount of soap to the stains on the clothes. Avoid scrubbing too hard as it can damage the clothes.
– Rinse the silk clothes with a solution of 40ml of vinegar. The vinegar solution helps remove soap residue and restore the shine of the silk. For the final rinse, use cold water. Take the clothes out of the basin and squeeze the silk gently. Then, lay the silk clothes flat in a large towel. The towel helps absorb excess water and prevents the clothes from becoming wrinkled due to squeezing.
– Finally, hang the silk clothes in a well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight.
Note:

– Do not apply perfume or alcohol to silk clothes when washing, as they slow down the drying process and can cause color fading.
– It is best to iron silk clothes on the inside. Adjust the heat on the iron to a moderate level. High heat can damage silk.
– Do not use bleach to wash silk clothes. Bleach will corrode and damage silk.
5. Denim

– Before washing, you should turn the wrong side of the pants/clothes out. Don’t forget to zip up and button the pants. In addition, it is advisable not to wash jeans by machine or dry them in a dryer as they are more likely to be damaged.
– Avoid washing denim with regular laundry detergent
– Regular laundry detergents have strong cleaning agents that can cause jeans to fade more. It is best to buy a cheap shampoo, body wash, or bar soap for washing clothes that are prone to color bleeding. Another important thing is never to use fabric softener for jeans, no matter how “gentle” the manufacturers recommend it to be.
– Be careful not to soak the jeans in soapy water for too long. If you see the jeans starting to bleed in the water, rinse them immediately and hang them to dry.
– After wearing, you can reuse a pair of jeans at least twice if you know how to take care of them. But remember, after wearing, you should turn it inside out and hang it in light sunlight for breathability, ensuring that your wardrobe doesn’t have a “musty” smell.
6. Cotton

Cotton fabric is woven from cotton fibers and is usually pre-shrunk before being sewn into clothes, so washing this type of fabric is quite simple. You can machine wash it with warm or cold water and multi-purpose detergents.
General notes:
– Unfold the garment when washing and drying.
– Avoid washing clothes of different colors together, especially in the first wash, as t-shirts are prone to color bleeding. If you wash them together, the clothes may fade and transfer color to the other clothes.
– Do not wash clothes in water hotter than 40 degrees Celsius, as hot water can cause fabric to stretch and damage the clothes.
– Avoid using strong laundry detergents, absolutely do not use bleach, especially on colored clothes.
– Avoid using fabric softeners. If you want your clothes to smell better after washing, you can use fabric fresheners. If you use fabric softeners, the t-shirts will stretch very quickly. Fabric softener and hang drying are a great combo if you want to “destroy” your favorite shirt. Additionally, fabric softeners can soften and cause the printed design on the fabric to peel off.
– It is best to hand wash the clothes. If using a washing machine, you should turn the clothes inside out to avoid the printed design rubbing against the washing drum and causing it to peel off.
– Do not squeeze or wring the t-shirts after washing, as it can cause the fabric to stretch and damage the clothes.
7. Satin

– To keep satin fabric in good condition, hand wash it separately, do not soak it with clothes of different colors.
– Do not rub or wring, you can wash the fabric with warm water mixed with a little ammonia, then immerse it back in a mixture of molasses vinegar, then spread it on a flat surface, smooth it out, and let it dry.
– Avoid direct exposure to sunlight. When you first buy it, you can put a little salt in the first wash to reduce fabric fading.
