Drinking alcohol while driving is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. Despite extensive media coverage on the harmful effects of alcohol while driving, not everyone understands and complies with the law. However, if you do not abide by the regulations on blood alcohol concentration while driving, you will be penalized.
1. Violation levels as per regulations
According to the Law on Prevention and Control of Alcohol-Related Harms (Law No. 44/2019/QH14), from January 1, 2020, Vietnam will completely ban the act of driving motor vehicles, motorcycles, electric bikes, etc., and non-motorized vehicles (bicycles, pedicabs, wheelchairs, etc.) with alcohol in the blood or breath. This means that even if you have just one drink and then drive, you will be penalized if you are stopped by a traffic police officer.
With this new regulation, there will be a complete ban, and the previous blood alcohol concentration limits will no longer apply. The law also clearly defines the concepts of “alcohol” and “beer.” Specifically, alcohol concentration refers to the measurement of the alcohol content in alcoholic beverages, while beer is calculated as a percentage by volume. Alcohol concentration is measured in milliliters of pure ethanol per 100 milliliters of solution at 20 degrees Celsius.
2. Factors affecting blood alcohol concentration
It is true that even when people consume the same amount of alcohol, their blood alcohol levels can vary. Therefore, it is not surprising that some individuals may receive higher or lower fines when stopped by the police.
Why does this happen? The amount of alcohol measured in each person’s body depends on various factors such as weight, drinking speed, resting time before driving, gender, and individual nervous system differences. As a result, recommendations on the number of drinks one can have before driving may be accurate for some but not for all.
In this case, let’s focus on the most noticeable factor, which is weight and body type. Specifically, individuals with larger body weights and taller statures will have lower blood alcohol concentrations when consuming the same amount of alcoholic beverage as someone who is shorter and lighter.
3. Ways to reduce blood alcohol concentration
There is no quick way or trick to reduce blood alcohol concentration. Drinking coffee or taking a cold shower, for example, have been proven ineffective in lowering blood alcohol levels.
After consuming alcohol, it is advisable to rest for at least 40 minutes to allow the alcohol concentration in your body to decrease. If you do not feel confident about driving safely, it is best to take a taxi or ask someone else to drive you home. Never drive after drinking alcohol.
Alcohol is a potent psychoactive substance that can impair the nervous system. Therefore, driving under the influence of alcohol is unsafe. We hope that this article will help you stay safe on the roads and avoid any unnecessary violations.
