How often should you wash your jeans? The surprising answer

The concept of not washing jeans in a machine was introduced by none other than Charles 'Chip' Bergh, the CEO and Chairman of Levi's fashion company.

Bergh made headlines in 2014 when he admitted to never washing his favorite pair of jeans for 10 years.

“If you talk to people who are real denim nerds, they all agree that you should never wash your jeans,” Bergh said. “I just spot clean mine as needed. Worst case scenario, I hand wash my jeans. And I do it myself. I mean, I love my jeans and I take care of them.”

The CEO of Levi’s recommends washing jeans every 10 wears (if possible) to maintain the fit and fabric quality.

Why shouldn’t you wash jeans?

Avoid using a dryer after washing jeans to preserve the color and fabric.

British company Huit Denim claims that denim clothing (used to produce jeans) should ideally go unwashed for 6 months. The longer you wait, the better your jeans will look.

John Reid, CEO of clothing retailer Garment Quarter, also agrees with Bergh’s advice.

“Washing jeans can alter the fabric structure. In fact, you don’t need to wash your favorite jeans regularly. The amount of water they come into contact with in the washing machine can affect the shape and color of denim as it fades over time. Jeans made from cotton fabric have less stretch, and over time, they will become more comfortable,” Reid said.

However, there is an exception to the no-washing rule for jeans made from fabric blends that contain elastane, instead of raw denim. Regular washing can help the fabric regain its shape after stretching.

Tips for caring for jeans:

– Do not tumble dry jeans after washing, let them air dry. Air drying will help maintain the shape of the jeans. If you want to use a dryer, make sure to use the lowest setting.

– Hang jeans to dry in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. Excessive heat can cause your jeans to fade quickly.

– Do not fold jeans after drying, hang them instead. This will keep the jeans looking straight and fresh, like new.

Proper way to wash jeans:

Hand wash

Take the time to hand wash new jeans. This hand washing method will help prevent the jeans from fading. Machine washing jeans frequently can cause them to lose color and stretch more than when you first bought them.

Washing jeans together with other clothes in the washing machine can also cause the color of the jeans to transfer onto other garments. If you are busy and don’t have time for hand washing, you can wash jeans with fabrics of the same color.

Wash with cold water and a little salt

You can soak your jeans in cold water with a little salt to keep them looking like new. For new jeans, soak for about 12 hours and then rinse with water. After that, use fabric softener to give the jeans a pleasant scent.

Wash with cold water

Whether your jeans are new or old, you should not wash them with hot water as it can cause the jeans to fade, shrink, and lose their original shape. Therefore, wash your jeans with cold water to avoid color fading and maintain the original fit.

Don’t wash jeans too often

Washing jeans too frequently will cause them to fade quickly and become worn out. It’s best to wash them less frequently to keep them looking like new.

Jeans made from special fabric are less likely to absorb odors and dirt, unless you spill food on them or roll in the mud for a long time. Therefore, you can wear them at least twice before washing.

Turn jeans inside out when washing

To prevent the dyed side of jeans from coming into contact with water, soap, and avoid color fading during washing, you should turn them inside out whether you are hand washing or using a washing machine. This method also helps prevent friction and repeated rubbing from fading and wearing out the jeans.
