Spring is a vibrant season, with trees showcasing new growth and colors. It’s a time when many of us bring the outdoors inside, decorating our homes with plants to capture that spring essence. However, the Lunar New Year holiday often means we need to leave our precious plants behind as we travel. So, how can we ensure our plants stay healthy and happy while we’re away?
Here are some simple and effective methods to keep your plants watered:
1 Self-Watering Bottle
Self-Watering Bottle
A simple and effective method to keep your plants watered for up to 7 days. All you need is a hammer, a small nail, and an empty water bottle. Create a small hole in the bottle cap using the hammer and nail, fill the bottle with water, and invert it so that your plant receives a steady drip of water.
2 Drip Irrigation with a Bottle and String
This method utilizes capillary action to water your plants. Choose a string with good absorbency, such as cotton string or a shoelace. Wrap the string around the tip of a screwdriver and push it into the soil, leaving the string in place. Place the other end of the string into a water-filled container, and your plant will draw up the water it needs.
3 Drip Irrigation with a Tube
For this method, you’ll need tubing (such as from an IV drip), a plastic water container, a piece of wire, a hammer, a nail, and scissors. First, create a hanging loop in the water container using the wire. Then, feed the tubing through the container’s lid, making small holes at 1cm intervals. Connect the tubing to the holes and hang the container so that water drips through.
4 Create a Mini Greenhouse
Trap moisture around your plant by placing it in a clear plastic bag with a damp cloth at the bottom. Seal the bag tightly, leaving some air inside, and place it in a sunny spot. For larger plants, use plastic sheeting and old newspapers to line a bathtub, place the plants inside, and cover with a shower curtain.
5 Timer-Controlled Watering
Smart watering systems, such as timer-controlled water valves, are a convenient solution. Set up the system to water your plants at specific intervals, and adjust the settings to suit your plants’ needs, whether they prefer a spray or a drip.
6 Water-Retaining Gel Crystals
These natural gel crystals are available at garden stores and help your plants retain moisture. Simply poke holes in the soil of your potted plant, sprinkle the crystals on top, and they will absorb and slowly release water to the roots. This method is effective for up to 3 days.
7 Water-Filled Tray
Ideal for water-loving plants, this method is simple: fill a tray with water and place your potted plant on top, ensuring the pot has holes in the bottom. The plant will draw up water as needed.
With these methods, you can ensure your plants thrive while you enjoy your holiday. Happy Lunar New Year!
