Cilantro is a popular herb that many people love. Cilantro can be eaten raw, added to salads, stir-fries, soups, and more. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is also a good medicinal herb for health.

One of the characteristics of cilantro is that it does not last long. It wilts and withers in just 1-2 days. To keep cilantro fresh and flavorful, follow these methods below.

Put cilantro in a glass of water

First, remove the wilted leaves and clean the cilantro.

Then, pour water into a small glass, the water level should be about 5cm high.

Place the cilantro stem into the glass of water. Then, wrap it with a plastic bag.

Store the glass of cilantro in the refrigerator.

With this method, cilantro will stay fresh for 2-4 weeks, depending on the condition of the cilantro when you first bought it.

Preserve with paper towel

With this method, you should only remove the wilted branches and should not wash the cilantro. Use a dry paper towel for the cilantro.

Then, divide the cilantro into small portions for each use. Wrap the cilantro tightly with paper towel. If the length of the cilantro is longer than the paper towel, use another piece of paper to continue wrapping until the cilantro is fully covered. Both ends of the bunch should be tightly wrapped as well.

Put each wrapped cilantro bundle into a ziplock bag. Remove the air inside the bag and seal it. Place the bag of cilantro in the refrigerator.

If you wash the cilantro before preservation, you can keep it for about 2 weeks. If you don’t wash it, the preservation time can be extended to 4 weeks, depending on the condition of the cilantro when you bought it.

Freeze for long-term storage

To preserve cilantro for a longer period, you should keep it in the freezer.

Wash the cilantro thoroughly and let it dry. Cut the cilantro into small pieces.

Put the chopped cilantro into a ziplock bag or a container with a lid. Place the bag/container of cilantro in the freezer.

With this method, you can preserve cilantro for at least 3 months. When you need to use it, simply take out an appropriate amount of cilantro and add it directly to your dish, without thawing.

If you thaw it before cooking, the quality and flavor of cilantro will decrease significantly.

With these preservation methods, you can only use cilantro in cooked dishes and cannot use it for garnishing.

To keep cilantro fresh for up to 3 months, first trim the ends of the cilantro stems. Stand the cilantro in a jar or glass of water, just like a bouquet of flowers, and cover the leaves loosely with a plastic bag. Secure the bag around the jar with a rubber band and store it in the refrigerator.

Trimming the ends of the stems helps to remove any dirt or residue and also stimulates water absorption, keeping the cilantro hydrated and fresh for longer.

Standing the cilantro in a jar of water mimics the way flowers are kept fresh in a vase. This ensures that the cilantro continues to absorb water and stay hydrated, just like cut flowers. It also helps to keep the cilantro upright and accessible for easy use.

The plastic bag creates a humid environment, which helps to prevent the cilantro from drying out. It also protects the leaves from any contaminants in the refrigerator while still allowing airflow to prevent condensation and rot.

It is recommended to change the water every few days to keep it fresh and prevent any bacterial growth. Trimming the ends of the stems again when you change the water can also help extend the life of your cilantro.
