Scooters are becoming increasingly popular in Vietnam, but not everyone knows how to use them to maximize fuel efficiency. The following tips on how to ride a scooter to save gas not only help you save fuel, but also increase the lifespan of your scooter.

Let the scooter warm up for 1 to 2 minutes before moving

After a long period of inactivity, you should let the scooter warm up for 1 to 2 minutes before riding. With a scooter, users should keep the throttle steady when starting, and then gradually increase the throttle.

This will allow the fuel and engine oil enough time to reach all the parts and provide sufficient lubrication, ensuring smooth operation and fuel efficiency.

Maintain a steady speed

An article in Labor Newspaper points out one of the common causes of excessive fuel consumption in scooters is the way people ride. So, to save fuel on your scooter, you should avoid sudden throttle changes and maintain a steady and appropriate speed, while reducing throttle gradually when encountering road conditions.

Most scooters today have an optimal speed range of 40 to 50km/h for the most efficient fuel saving.

Avoid driving too slowly

This is advice for anyone riding a motorcycle if they want to save fuel. It’s not just scooters, but all types of motorcycles consume more fuel when driven at slow speeds. Here, driving slowly means driving between 5 – 10km/h because at low speeds, the centrifugal force does not transfer motion to the wheels.

According to experts, for the wheels to rotate once, the engine must rotate 25 times. Therefore, to maintain a steady ride, the speed must be above 10km/h. At this speed, the throttle must be increased to increase the pushing force of the scooter. Increasing throttle will increase heat energy consumption and decreasing throttle will significantly reduce fuel consumption.

Turn off the engine when stopped for more than 20 seconds

When you need to stop for more than 20 seconds, such as at a red light, you should turn off the engine to save fuel and also reduce environmental emissions.

Avoid accelerating while braking

According to Vietnamnet, a habit of some people when stopping at a red light is to accelerate while braking. However, this is a harmful action for the scooter because it quickly burns out the clutch and if it happens frequently, it will cause the scooter’s clutch to slip, have poor acceleration, and consume more fuel.

Ensure the tires are properly inflated

Underinflated tires can cause unstable movement and, of course, increase fuel consumption. On the other hand, overinflated tires can increase shock and reduce riding comfort.

You should inflate the tires to the appropriate level, ideally matching the recommended pressure for each type of tire.

Avoid sudden acceleration after stopping at a red light

Many people have a habit of suddenly accelerating after stopping at a red light to quickly take off. However, this is an action that causes the scooter to consume fuel several times more than usual.

If you want to save fuel, after the red light turns off, you should gradually accelerate and smoothly shift gears.

Regularly maintain and service the scooter

Components such as belts, air filters, electronic fuel injection systems, carburetors, spark plugs… directly affect fuel consumption. Therefore, to save fuel, you should regularly take your scooter for maintenance and check-ups.

As for the engine oil, you should also regularly change it to ensure more efficient operation and fuel efficiency. If you use oil with too high viscosity, energy and time consumption for oil pumping will be higher, resulting in higher fuel consumption.
