On June 1st, 1942, German Nazis massacred and arrested over 369 innocent people, including women and children, in the village of Lidice (Czechoslovakia). Two years later, they rounded up 400 people, including many women and over 100 children, in the church of Oradour-sur-Glane (France), and brutally murdered them by setting fire to the church.
These atrocious acts by the Nazis outraged world opinion, and to commemorate the hundreds of innocent children who lost their lives in this senseless war, the International Democratic Federation of Women decided to establish June 1st as International Children’s Day in 1949.
