Last night, my husband went out drinking with his friends and didn’t come home until late. I kept telling him to come home early, but he still came back totally drunk and in a fishing outfit. I was so annoyed that I locked the bedroom door and went to sleep with our baby. My husband has this habit of wanting to hug and kiss our baby when he’s drunk, but our baby is only a few months old, so I locked the bedroom door to prevent him from coming in.
Unable to open the door, he ended up sleeping on the sofa in the living room. I didn’t care, he could sleep wherever he wanted. But the next morning, I was shocked.
When I opened the refrigerator in the morning, I was shocked to see my husband’s shoes inside. (Illustrative photo)
It turns out that when I opened the refrigerator to get ingredients for breakfast, I found a pair of shoes in the freezer. Somehow, my husband must have accidentally put his shoes in the refrigerator instead of the shoe cabinet. And he even put them in a plastic bag like I store food as well.
Looking both annoyed and amused, I woke my husband up and showed him this “masterpiece” right away. He was also shocked and couldn’t remember what he did last night when he came home.
However, when we checked the shoes inside the plastic bag, both my husband and I were surprised to find that the shoe odor had completely disappeared. My husband sweats a lot on his feet, so even though he washes his shoes regularly, keeps his feet clean, and dries them before putting on the shoes, they still tend to have an unpleasant odor inside.
Normally, my husband has to use specialized shoe deodorant spray every day to reduce the smell. But now, he no longer needs to use it because the shoe odor has completely disappeared.
Excited, my husband and I have learned a new way to eliminate shoe odor. But since the refrigerator is used to store food, we still use the shoe deodorant spray and only rely on the refrigerator as a backup when we run out of the spray.
Why does putting shoes in the refrigerator help eliminate odor?
Even though we wash our feet thoroughly and dry them before putting on the shoes, it is still difficult to prevent the buildup of sweat and certain bacteria inside the shoes, which causes the odor. Especially with low-quality shoes that have poor breathability, the odor can develop quickly.
Putting shoes in the refrigerator to eliminate odor may sound strange, but it’s actually a very effective method. The temperature inside the freezer restricts and kills the bacteria that cause the odor, making the shoes odor-free.
However, you cannot directly put the shoes into the freezer. Instead, put the shoes in a plastic bag, seal it tightly, and then place it in the refrigerator/freezer. This will avoid compromising the hygiene of the refrigerator and prevent the shoes from absorbing odors from other types of food, which can have counterproductive effects.
In addition to putting shoes in the refrigerator, you can also try the following methods to eliminate shoe odor:
– Use baking soda: Shoe odor is acidic, while baking soda is alkaline. Sprinkle some baking soda inside the shoes before wearing them, and you won’t have to worry about the odor even if you wear the shoes all day. Alternatively, prepare a paper bag containing baking soda and put it in the shoes every day when you come home. The next day, there will be no more odor.
– Use a copper coin: Copper metal has antibacterial properties. When you sweat, water will hydrolyze copper into ions, which can penetrate and disrupt the structures of microorganisms and bacteria that cause odor, effectively eliminating shoe odor. So if you have a copper coin, put it in the shoes every day after work and take it out the next morning.
– Use 75% alcohol: Foot sweat is the odor of organic substances that are easily soluble in alcohol and ethanol. Spraying 75% alcohol on the shoes will make the odor evaporate and quickly eliminate shoe odor.
Other effects of putting shoes in the refrigerator
In addition to eliminating shoe odor, putting shoes in the refrigerator has other benefits as well. It can stretch the size of the shoes, preventing them from pinching your feet when you wear them.
Specifically, if you buy shoes online and they happen to be smaller than your feet, causing discomfort, you can use the refrigerator to fix them. Here’s a simple way to do it:
– Pour water into two ziplock bags. The amount of water poured into the bags depends on how much you want to stretch the shoes. If the toe area is tight, pour 1/4 of the bag. If the toe and the ball of the foot area are tight, pour 1/2 of the bag. If the toe, ball, and arch areas are tight, pour 1/3 – 1/2 of the bag.
– Check the bags carefully, make sure they are tightly sealed and there is no air inside. This helps prevent the bags from expanding when frozen, maintaining the shape of the shoes.
– Put the bags of water into the shoes, seal them tightly, and make sure no water leaks out. Try to place the bags of water as close to the toe area as possible if that’s the area you want to stretch.
– Put the shoes in the freezer for 4-8 hours until the water in the bags freezes.
– After this period of time, take the shoes out and let them sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes to allow the ice to melt. Then remove the bags of water from the shoes.
