Does keeping food in the refrigerator use electricity?

When both refrigerators have reached the set cooling temperature, they will use the same amount of energy if the door is tightly closed.

Refrigerators use energy for only one purpose: to compensate for the heat transferred from the outside to the inside through the insulated shell.

Since both refrigerators are exactly the same, the rate of heat transfer must be the same.

Suppose every half an hour we open both refrigerators (with the same frequency) for 10 seconds, then the empty refrigerator (B) will lose all the cold air (the entire volume of the refrigerator), and the inside space will be replaced with room temperature air.

Meanwhile, the full refrigerator (A) will only lose the amount of air around the food.

After closing the door, both refrigerators will have to cool down the new air – which is warmer than the set temperature.

It is obvious that a large amount of air in the empty refrigerator (B) will require more energy to cool down than the small amount of air in the full refrigerator (A).

Therefore, in theory: A fuller refrigerator will use less electricity under normal conditions.

In general, a full refrigerator (or a tightly closed freezer) will consume less energy than the same refrigerator when it is empty or contains fewer items when all the food is stored at the desired temperature.

The negative energy stored in those foods helps reduce the load on the compressor and the refrigeration cycle. In other words, the specific heat capacity of the entire mass of food is greater than the specific heat capacity of the air it occupies.

How to check if the refrigerator is wasting electricity using a paper bill

To check if the refrigerator door is open or not, you just need to take a paper bill, clip it to the refrigerator door, and then close it. After that, slowly pull out the paper bill. If the bill easily comes out, it means the rubber part of the door is problematic. If you feel friction when pulling it out, then the refrigerator door is normal. Keep in mind that when the door is open, hot air from the outside will enter, causing the refrigerator to consume more energy.

This is why you have to reluctantly pay the electricity bill every month. And what you need to do right now is to replace the door gasket. You can replace the refrigerator door gasket at home to save money or call a technician to fix it.
