When it comes to interior design, there are numerous ideas available on the internet that you can learn and apply to beautify your home. However, not all trends are suitable for real spaces and some can be disappointing. In this article, Insider has compiled eight common interior design styles or designs that may not live up to expectations.

Sink mounted on a table

This style involves tightly installing a sink on a bathroom cabinet with an integrated or wall-mounted tap. While visually appealing, designer Leslie Markman-Stern points out that this type of furniture is difficult to use and clean. The junction between the sink and the countertop is particularly challenging to clean. Furthermore, individuals with limited height, the elderly, and people with disabilities may find it inconvenient to use this sink. Additionally, finding suitable replacements for damaged products can be challenging.

Dining bench

While a bench can create a focal point and give a dining table a modern look, it may not be as convenient as many people imagine. If the person seated in the middle wants to stand up, those sitting on the sides have to adjust their posture or stand up to make way.

Accent wall

Creating a focal point on a wall by painting or using wallpaper, known as an accent wall, is considered outdated by designer Sally Soricelli. She suggests exploring other ways to add color to a room, such as using accessories or pillows.

Terrazzo tiles

While many people prefer terrazzo tiles, designers advise against using them excessively. Installing terrazzo tiles on every surface, from floors to kitchen walls, can make a space appear monotonous. Moreover, brightly colored terrazzo with various patterns can be visually overwhelming.

Bright and bold colors

Placing a bright red chair in a predominantly white living room with the intention of adding a focal point may not achieve the desired effect. According to designer Colin Haentjen, choosing colors that are too different from the overall theme can be counterproductive. Instead, opt for vibrant colors that blend well with the space, such as pastel colors or earth tones.

Vertical gardens

Vertical gardens, consisting of multiple plant pots arranged on shelves or racks, may seem like an attractive idea but can be challenging to implement. Maintaining these walls is difficult, and they create conditions for mold growth and attract insects. Alternatively, walls made of fake plants are not recommended as they collect dirt and the plastic material used is not human-friendly.

Gray furniture

Gray is a popular color in modern design styles. However, incorporating too much gray in a space, from floors and walls to furniture, can make it look dull and lacking vitality. Designers suggest adding some warm beige colors or even red to create balance in a gray space.

Square wall tiles

Square tiles are a common choice for tiling bathroom and kitchen walls. However, before installing them, it’s important to consider some factors. In high humidity environments, bacteria can easily grow on the surface of square tiles. Additionally, square tiles are prone to staining, cracking, and chipping.
