Recently, a funny story about a family living in Ho Chi Minh City after the Tet holiday has received a lot of attention. Specifically, according to the homeowner, after a long period of going back to their hometown and going on a spring trip, the family returned and discovered a strange smell in the house. This smell caused discomfort for the members of the family and was described as similar to the smell coming from the sewer, garbage, or from dead animals and insects.
After inspecting around the house, the culprit behind this smell was finally discovered. It was the freezer, which was storing a lot of fresh food for the family. And the underlying reason why the freezer was emitting the smell is because someone had accidentally pulled out the power cord of the appliance.
With the hot weather in the southern region, the long-term unrefrigerated fresh food has spoiled, causing a foul smell that spread throughout the entire house. After this situation, the family had to make a lot of effort to clean the freezer, eliminate the odor from the house, and throw away all the spoiled food.
In reality, unplugging electrical devices for a long time when the homeowners are away is a necessary task. Electric experts strongly emphasize that it not only helps save electricity costs but also reduces the risk of serious fires when the electrical system or some devices in the house short circuit when no one is at home. However, refrigerators and freezers are exceptions to the list of devices that need/should be unplugged when the family is away.
Because the main purpose of these appliances is to store food for a long time, refrigerators and freezers must always be connected to power. From there, the devices can ensure their operation, provide cool air to preserve the food, especially fresh food. If the family needs to cut off the main power or unplug the refrigerator for a long time while being away, it is best to remove all the food inside the refrigerator.

Devices that should be unplugged when away from home
USAToday emphasizes that when away from home for a period of 1 day or more, families should unplug and turn off the power of a series of devices. This is especially important and helps protect your home from fire accidents caused by abnormal electricity, in addition to saving a portion of the electricity bill.
The list of devices that should be unplugged, powered off, or completely disconnected when the homeowners are away includes TVs, fans, air conditioning, washing machines, water heaters, Wi-Fi routers, or electric stoves. Many experts estimate that on average, each household has about 40 continuously used electrical devices. Not unplugging these devices when away from home can account for 10-30% of the electricity consumption per year.

For example, Wi-Fi routers, also known as Wi-Fi transmitters. According to the website of the Vietnam Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program, under the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development: This device can consume about 2-20W/h, with an average of about 6W/h. If left on continuously for 1 year, a Wi-Fi router can consume about 50 kWh of electricity.
This number can be wasted if the family does not unplug the device when away from home. In addition, unplugging the device also allows the router to have rest time, reduce heat, thereby improving the network access speed of the family, and ensuring the long-lasting life of the device.

Or with the TVs that every family has at least one of. Turning off the TV with just the remote control is not enough, because at this time, the device itself is still in standby mode and consumes a certain amount of electricity. Many evaluations show that the number of electricity wasted by families is about 24W per day. However, unplugging the TV or other devices in the home entertainment system should not be done too abruptly. Users should still turn off the device with the remote control first, then wait a few minutes before unplugging the power cord.
The charging cables of electronic devices such as laptops, phones, tablets… are also names on the list of devices to be unplugged from the outlet when users are away, even when there is someone at home, but without the need to use them. Many people share that they have a habit of just plugging these chargers into the outlet for convenience when using. However, this habit not only causes electricity waste but also carries the risk of electrical leakage and explosions.
