The History of Cho Con Market

Cho Con Da Nang is one of the city’s famous and long-standing markets, established in the 1940s. However, there are no official records specifying the exact year of its inception. Some believe that the market was formed later, in the mid-1950s, to alleviate the overcrowding of Cho Han at that time. In 1958, the Da Nang Town Hall decided to establish Cho Con officially. Initially, the market only had two small pavilions, and over time, it expanded.

Before becoming the present-day Cho Con area, this land was a vast, pristine sand dune covered with reeds, cacti, and a stream flowing day and night. During the French colonial period, this place was also a terrifying execution site for those participating in the Viet Minh movement. It was the need for exchange and trade under those circumstances that led to the birth of Cho Con. When it was first established, the market consisted of temporary stalls made of bamboo and thatched roofs. The locals called it “Cho Con” because it was built on a white sand dune.

Development Process

Gradually, as Da Nang developed and infrastructure projects were constructed, the Cho Con area became a bustling commercial center in the city. Cho Con is located at the intersection of two major roads, Ruedela Repubelyque (now Hung Vuong Street) and Sabiella (now Ong Ich Khiem Street). Although it initially started as a small market, thanks to infrastructure development, Cho Con became a significant cargo transshipment point, serving trading needs within and outside Da Nang.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Cho Con flourished, with kiosks and a roofed market replacing the temporary stalls. Along with this, bus stations and shops around Cho Con began to emerge, forming a bustling commercial area. Famous shops such as “Van Hoa Bookstore,” “Mr. Ty’s Bakery,” “Xuang Cafe,” “Thai Ngu Pho,” or “Quanh Hung Confectionery” were all located near Cho Con, along with grocery stores and agencies selling essential goods.

Reconstruction and Modernization

In 1984, the People’s Committee of Quang Nam-Da Nang Province invested in completely rebuilding Cho Con, transforming it into a modern commercial complex. The new name of the market was the Da Nang Trade Center, constructed on an area of 12,417 square meters, including department stores, service areas, canopies for dry goods, and food areas. This center was built to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Da Nang’s liberation. Although it had a new name, locals and traders still called it Cho Con. After 27 years, the familiar name of Cho Con, which was once lost in the paperwork, was officially used again in state management documents.

Cho Con Today

Currently, Cho Con is divided into three main areas: the dry goods area, the indoor food court, and the outdoor area. Each area is arranged conveniently for visitors and shoppers. The indoor food court is divided into two rows: one row features sweet dishes such as che (sweet soup) and sinh to (fruit blender), and the other row offers savory dishes such as bun (rice vermicelli), mi Quang (Quang-style noodles), and com rang (fried rice), with reasonable prices ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 VND per dish.

The outdoor area of the market is dubbed a “food paradise,” offering a variety of Da Nang specialties such as hu tieu (rice noodles), mi Quang, banh beo (steamed rice cakes), and banh bot loc (clear shrimp and pork dumplings), attracting tourists from all over.

The dry goods section of Cho Con is also an ideal place for those looking to buy souvenirs or Da Nang specialties as gifts.

Notes When Visiting Cho Con

Choose Da Nang specialties: Instead of eating dishes that can be found anywhere, try the local specialties to experience unique flavors and choose delicious treats to take home as gifts.

Make a food list: Before visiting the market, create a list of Da Nang specialties you want to try to avoid overeating and missing out on other delicious options.

Negotiate prices: When buying dry goods, clothes, or souvenirs, negotiate a discount of 30-40% off the initial price.

Protect your belongings: When visiting the market, pay attention to your valuables and personal belongings, especially in crowded areas or when trying on clothes.

Closing time: Cho Con closes at 7:00 PM, so arrive at least an hour early to fully explore the market and enjoy the food and shopping.

Cho Con Da Nang is not just a famous destination for its specialties but also an integral part of the city’s culture and history.
