Sold Out Every Tet Holiday
Originating from China, snow plum blossoms are graceful white flowers with a subtle fragrance, symbolizing wealth and luck in the new year. In the Vietnamese market, there are currently two types: regular snow plum (company-grade) and wild snow plum. However, most women prefer wild snow plum for its elegant appearance and softly curved branches that are easy to bend. Typically, snow plum branches range from 90 to 120 cm in length, and each blooming cycle lasts about 3 to 4 weeks.

Snow plum blossoms remain a hot favorite, continuing to be sought after during the Tet holiday in the Year of the Dragon.
Snow plum blossoms are not cheap, and their prices vary widely, ranging from 120,000 to 250,000 VND per bundle, or even as low as 90,000 VND per bundle of 5-7 branches. According to a flower shop owner, this year’s prices are lower than last year’s to stimulate consumer demand during difficult economic times. Many people buy snow plum blossoms early and start caring for them from the 10th of the twelfth lunar month to have them ready for Tet.

A Hobby That Tests One’s “Virtue”
As beautiful as they are, snow plum blossoms also cause anxiety for those who indulge in this hobby. It’s not just about arranging and caring for the flowers, but also about getting them to bloom at the right time, which, as internet users jokingly say, depends on one’s “virtue.”
Many people have found themselves in a hilarious situation where they bought snow plum blossoms for Tet, only to find that on New Year’s Eve, the flowers showed no signs of blooming, resembling a bundle of firewood. There are also cases where, for unknown reasons, the flowers went into early “hibernation” and ended up blooming more than ten days before Tet.
“Playing with snow plum blossoms is like testing your virtue. I took care of them meticulously, watering them twice a day and cutting the stems diagonally as instructed, but only one cluster bloomed,” said M. Tâm, 34, from Ho Chi Minh City.
Women often joke that playing with snow plum blossoms depends on one’s virtue.
Despite the challenges, many people still enjoy this hobby during Tet, seeing it as a fun test of their “green thumb.” On forums, several people shared that after last year’s failure, they gained more experience this year in caring for snow plum blossoms to ensure they bloomed beautifully and on time and lasted longer.
According to the experience of many women who have “gone through the snow plum blossom ordeal,” it is best to choose flowers with thick and dense buds and curved shapes, as they will look more attractive in a vase. After bringing them home, the first step is to estimate the height of the branches that will fit the vase (usually a large and tall one) and then cut them at a 45-degree angle, splitting the ends of the smaller branches in half and the larger ones into quarters, with a length of about 5-7 cm. This helps the roots absorb water better and transfer it to the branches and flower buds.
Snow plum blossoms need to be watered twice a day with a mist spray or shower nozzle, and they should be kept away from heat. A small tip for beginners is to soak the flowers in a bucket of water first to facilitate easier water changes, and only when the flowers bloom should they be arranged in a vase. Regular watering is the key to successful blooming, so this step should not be overlooked. Once the flowers have bloomed, you can display them in a vase in your home.
