The liver, a vital organ in the human body, is facing numerous threats from unhealthy lifestyle choices and the misuse of medication. While alcohol is often cited as the liver’s arch-nemesis, the overconsumption of painkillers and antibiotics can inflict similar, if not more insidious, damage.

According to medical experts, the abuse of painkillers and antibiotics in Vietnam has reached alarming levels. PGS Nguyen Huu Duc from Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy sheds light on the issue, stating that many individuals, driven by the desire for swift recovery, overdose on painkillers, unknowingly endangering their livers. The insidious nature of drug abuse lies in its delayed manifestation; the adverse effects accumulate over time, only becoming apparent when substantial damage has occurred.

The situation is exacerbated by the rampant sale of antibiotics without prescriptions in pharmacies across the country. PGS.TS Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Department of Examination and Treatment Management under the Ministry of Health, warns that easy access to antibiotics without medical supervision leads to their misuse and incorrect dosage. The common practice of self-medicating with antibiotics before seeking professional help transforms these medications into a significant threat to liver health.

The rampant sale of antibiotics in pharmacies contributes to their misuse and endangers liver health.

American digestive and liver specialist, Dr. Anurag Maheshwari, emphasizes that acetaminophen, a common ingredient in painkillers, can lead to liver overload if consumed in excess of 4,000mg per day. Additionally, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen can also inflict liver damage when not taken as directed.

Of particular concern is the widely used antibiotic Augmentin, which has been associated with liver injury, especially during prolonged use or in individuals with pre-existing liver conditions. The insidious nature of liver ailments further complicates matters, as they often progress silently and are only detected in advanced stages, such as cirrhosis.

To safeguard this vital organ, experts urge the public to:

– Adhere to physician instructions when taking medication

– Refrain from self-medicating with long-term drug use

– Regularly monitor liver function if taking continuous medication

– Minimize the use of medications of unknown origin

Implementing these measures will help mitigate the risk of liver damage and ensure overall health and well-being.
