Eggs are an essential part of our daily diet. They are highly nutritious and affordable, making them a popular choice for various dishes such as boiling, frying, stewing, and more, each with its unique appealing flavor.
Usually, when you buy eggs, you store them in the refrigerator. But what if your fridge is too small or you don’t have one? How can you keep the eggs you bought fresh?
Fret not! A chef has shared a tip on an alternative way to store eggs without a fridge. Here is a specific tip for you:
1. Store eggs in a rice container
Rice containers are not only great for storing rice, but they can also help with other issues like ripening fruits and drying electronic devices. And now, it can help with egg storage, too!
Rice is known to be very dry. When eggs are placed in a rice container, the husk can seal tiny holes in the eggshell, isolating them from air and bacterial invasion. This helps absorb excess moisture from the eggs and keeps them fresh for longer.
Note: Before placing eggs in the rice container, use a dry cloth to wipe the eggshells clean. It is important to place the smaller end of the egg down and the larger end up to prevent the yolk from sticking to the shell.
This method can even help keep eggs fresher for longer than in a fridge.
Some people also suggest burying eggs in a rice husk container to keep them fresh for up to four months. Spread a layer of rice husk at the bottom of the container, then arrange the eggs and cover them with another layer of husk. The topmost layer should be a thick layer of husk. Every ten days, turn the eggs to check for any discolored or spoiled eggs and remove them.
2. Soak in salted water
Prepare a container and fill it with an appropriate amount of boiled and cooled water. Add a small amount of salt and stir until dissolved. Finally, soak the eggs in this mild saltwater solution for about 5 minutes.
Saltwater has antibacterial properties and helps kill bacteria. After soaking, wipe the eggs dry with a clean cloth and store them in a cool, well-ventilated area. This method ensures the eggs stay fresh and free from deterioration.
3. Coat with a layer of cooking oil
Pour a small amount of cooking oil into a bowl and evenly coat the surface of the eggs with it. The oil creates a protective barrier on the eggshell, isolating the eggs from external bacteria and inhibiting their growth, thus prolonging the shelf life of the eggs.
