The first ever toe nail transplantation for finger nails

On July 19, Professor Dr. Tran Thiet Son, Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Xanh Pon Hospital (Hanoi), announced that for the first time, his department has successfully utilized the technique of transplanting toenails to create fingernails for patient N.V.H (41 years old, from Hanoi) who lost both thumb digits in a workplace accident.

This is the first case in Vietnam that has been treated to restore function and aesthetics to a thumb injury.
According to Prof. Dr. Son, previously the treatment for these injuries was simply to amputate and shorten the finger without a nail. With the new technique, doctors have used a flap of skin that includes part of the nail and the pulp of the thumb, along with a blood vessel pedicle, to graft onto the injured part of the thumb.
The success of this case opens up a conservation treatment for thumb injuries because the thumb plays an important role in the function of the hand, while also ensuring the highest level of aesthetics by restoring the original shape of the finger.
