Dress pants are a wardrobe staple for formal events, but making sure they look crisp and sharp is essential. Today, Bach Hoa XANH will share a guide on how to iron dress pants like a pro.
1 What You Need
Before you start ironing your dress pants, make sure you have the following items ready:
Iron
Iron
You don’t need an expensive iron, but make sure it’s clean and free of rust or dust. To be safe, test it on a piece of white cloth that you no longer use.
Ironing Board

While you can use a thick cloth on the floor, it’s best to invest in an ironing board for a more comfortable ironing experience.
Clean Dress Pants

Of course, you’ll need your dress pants! But make sure they are freshly laundered before you start ironing.
Clean Water
Clean water for the iron’s water tank
Fill the iron’s water tank with clean water. The steam generated from the water will help remove wrinkles and give your dress pants a crisp look.
Water Spray Bottle

If your iron doesn’t have a built-in water tank, you can use a separate spray bottle to moisten the fabric while ironing.
2 How to Iron Dress Pants Like a Pro
Things to do before ironing
If your iron has a water tank, plug it in, fill the tank, and set the temperature accordingly. Turn it on and let it heat up. If your iron doesn’t have a water tank, you can still use a separate spray bottle to moisten the fabric during ironing.
Adjust the temperature according to the fabric type
Adjust the temperature according to the fabric type
Different types of dress pants have different fabric compositions, so pay attention to the temperature settings. Here’s a guide:
- Wool and silk: Set the temperature to 148°C.
- Acrylic, shiny fabric, and nylon: Set the temperature to 135°C.
- Linen: Set the temperature to 240°C.
- Cotton: Set the temperature to 204°C.
- Synthetic fiber: Set the temperature to 180°C.
Phase 1: Ironing the Top Part of the Pants
Iron the pocket edges
First, pull out the pockets and iron the edges to prevent them from showing in case the pants get wrinkled.
Iron the waistband and the top part of the pants
With the pockets pulled out, continue ironing the top part of the pants along the waistband. Then, iron the back of the pants in the same way.
Phase 2: Ironing the Pant Legs
Mark the pant legs at the bottom
Lay the dress pants on the ironing board with one end being the waist and the other the hem. Keep the pants straight and leave one pant leg on the board. Find the two connecting seams at the hem. Place the pant leg so that these seams are in the middle and overlap each other. The creases you need to iron are the two edges of the pant leg. Spray water on both sides of the pant leg and then iron the edges.
Mark the pant legs at the top
Similarly, find the connecting seam and the crease of the pant leg. Lay the pants flat so that the connecting seams are in the middle of the two pant legs. Then, gently iron to create the crease.
Iron the creases on the front and back of the pant legs
Connect the marks made in the previous steps and iron the creases on the front and back of the pant legs by moving the iron up and down.
Phase 3: Ironing the Bottom of the Pant Legs
Iron the pant legs
You don’t have to iron both sides of the pant legs. Just iron them to remove wrinkles between the creases. Additionally, you can use a thin, clean cloth as a barrier between the iron and the pants to avoid damaging the fabric.
Iron the crotch area
If you notice wrinkles in the crotch area, you can iron it using the same up-and-down motion as before.
3 Some Important Tips for Ironing Dress Pants
To ensure you successfully iron your dress pants and make them look neat and professional, keep the following tips in mind:
Check the Care Label

Many people tend to ignore or cut off the care label. However, this label provides clear instructions on how to properly care for and iron your dress pants.
Check the Fabric Type
Check the fabric type of your dress pants
As mentioned earlier, pay close attention to the fabric type of your dress pants to choose the right temperature setting. This will help prevent any damage to the fabric.
Ironing Time
Pay attention to the ironing time
Ironing for too long can be counterproductive. Stop ironing once the wrinkles disappear.
Iron Pants Before Shirts
Iron pants before shirts
It’s a little-known fact that ironing pants before shirts is more efficient. If you iron shirts first, the temperature required for the pants may not be sufficient, and you’ll have to adjust the settings again, making the task more time-consuming and difficult.
