During the Tet holiday in Northern Vietnam, many families prefer to use gladiolus flowers to decorate their homes.
In terms of feng shui, this flower is believed to ward off bad luck and bring good fortune.
At the beginning of the new year, people often display red or yellow gladioli, hoping for a lucky and prosperous year ahead.
Additionally, gladioli are also offered on ancestral altars as a sign of gratitude and respect to one’s ancestors and deities.
Gladioli are beautiful, but their stems tend to rot quickly. If not cared for properly, they will wilt within a few days.
To ensure your gladioli arrangement lasts throughout the Tet holiday, consider the following tips:
Clean the vase thoroughly
It is important to wash the vase with soap and water to remove any bacteria. Dry the vase completely and expose it to sunlight to ensure it is thoroughly sanitized.
When changing the water, take the opportunity to rinse the vase to maintain its cleanliness.
Trim the flower stems
When you buy gladioli, trim the long stems at an angle. This allows the flowers to absorb water more effectively.
Trimming the stems under running water ensures uninterrupted water flow through the flower’s vascular system, keeping the leaves and blossoms hydrated and fresh.
Remove any leaves that may be submerged in water, as they can rot and cause the flowers to wilt prematurely.
After cutting the stems, immediately place the flowers in water to ensure they absorb enough moisture and do not wilt.
If you wait too long to put the flowers in a vase, they will droop and lose their freshness.
Water for the flowers
Use clean, preferably warm water, for your arrangement. Warm water aids in the efficient transportation of water to the flower’s various parts.
Change the water in the vase daily to prolong the life of the flowers. When changing the water, clean the slime that accumulates around the flower stems, and consider trimming the stems again to improve water absorption.
Avoid filling the vase with too much water, as this can cause the flower stems to rot.
If you’re using floral foam, be sure to water it regularly to prevent it from drying out and causing the flowers to wilt.
Provide extra nourishment for the flowers
To ensure your gladioli bloom beautifully and last longer, consider adding the following to the water:
– Sugar: Sugar provides additional nourishment and aids in the photosynthesis process, benefiting the flower.
– Lemon juice or vinegar: Acidic substances like these have antibacterial properties and help keep the flowers fresh for longer.
– Potassium permanganate: For gladioli, a small amount of potassium permanganate, copper sulfate, or bleach can be added to inhibit microbial growth. Only a tiny amount, about 0.05 grams per liter of water, is needed for potassium permanganate. Similarly, only a few drops of the other solutions are required; simply mix them with water and stir before placing the flowers in the vase.
– Alcohol: Adding a small amount of clear alcohol to the water inhibits bacterial growth, preventing stem rot and prolonging the life of the flowers.
Placement of the flower arrangement
Avoid placing the flowers in direct sunlight or in drafty areas.
Keep the flowers away from electronic devices such as televisions and refrigerators. The heat emitted by these devices can cause the flowers to lose moisture and wilt.
