Pork prices have been soaring to unprecedented levels in recent days. This sudden spike in pork prices has caused a ripple effect, with food establishments that use pork in their dishes also increasing their prices.

1In Hanoi

A survey of several food establishments that use pork in Hanoi revealed that prices have increased by 3,000 to 7,000 VND on average. However, gio cha (a type of Vietnamese pork sausage) has seen a significant jump of 40,000 VND per kilogram.

Bun doc mung, a popular Vietnamese dish, has increased from 30,000-40,000 VND to 55,000 VND per bowl.

Doner kebab sandwiches, once priced at 20,000 VND each, now cost 25,000 VND.

Bun cha, another Vietnamese dish, has increased from 25,000 VND to 30,000 VND per bowl.

Meat skewers have gone up from 7,000-10,000 VND to 15,000 VND each.

Roast pork, previously 280,000 VND per kilogram, now costs 350,000 VND.

Gio cha has increased from 90,000-100,000 VND to 140,000 VND per kilogram.

Banh mi pate sandwiches, once priced at around 20,000 VND, now cost 25,000 VND each.

The owner of a bun cha restaurant in Thanh Xuan district shared that the surge in pork prices has made business challenging. Despite the increase, she is reluctant to raise her prices. Instead, she chooses to reduce the amount of cha in each bowl.

On the other hand, a popular rice restaurant on Chien Thang Street in Ha Dong district has decided to increase their prices by 3,000 to 5,000 VND per meal.

2In Can Tho

The rise in pork prices has also impacted food services in Can Tho, with most dishes increasing by 3,000 to 5,000 VND.

Mr. Minh Loc, the owner of a noodle shop on Nguyen Van Linh Street in Ninh Kieu district, shared that they had maintained the price of a noodle bowl at 22,000 VND for years. However, due to the recent pork price hike, they had to increase it to 25,000 VND.

3In Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City has also felt the impact of rising pork prices, with most dishes increasing by 3,000 to 5,000 VND.

The owner of a popular rice restaurant shared that they had to adjust their prices due to the surge in pork prices. As most of their dishes are pork-based, each meal now costs 5,000 VND more.

Many consumers have shared that the high pork prices have forced them to be more mindful of their spending. Some even consider refraining from consuming pork for the next few days.

As pork prices continue to rise daily, food establishments are forced to follow suit, and ultimately, it is the consumers who bear the brunt of these increases. It remains to be seen whether these restaurants will lower their prices once pork prices stabilize and drop again.

Frequently asked questions

Pork prices in Vietnam have soared due to a combination of factors, including an outbreak of African Swine Fever, which resulted in the culling of millions of pigs, and increased demand during the Lunar New Year holiday season.

The spike in pork prices has had a significant impact on consumers, with many forced to reduce their consumption or opt for alternative proteins. This has also had a knock-on effect on the economy, with inflation rising and the cost of living increasing for many Vietnamese households.

Pork is a staple meat in Vietnam and plays a significant role in the country’s culture and cuisine. The increase in prices has therefore had a notable social impact, with some traditional dishes becoming less affordable and consumers having to adjust their dietary habits.

The Vietnamese government has implemented a range of measures to stabilize pork prices and support the recovery of the pig industry. These include providing financial support to farmers, increasing imports of pork, and encouraging the development of alternative protein sources.

The long-term effects of the pork price increase remain to be seen, but it could lead to a shift in consumer habits and a more diverse protein market in Vietnam. It may also accelerate the development of alternative protein sources and encourage more sustainable farming practices in the future.
