Orange juice is a favorite drink for many, but making it at home can sometimes result in bitter-tasting juice. Why does this happen, and how can you quickly extract juice without the bitterness? Let’s explore some tips to achieve this.

1. Hand-Squeezing Oranges

Step 1 Start by gently kneading the orange with your hands to soften it, then use a knife to cut it horizontally and remove all the seeds.

Step 2 Grip one half of the orange firmly and squeeze out the juice with force. Repeat with the other half, and you’re done.

2. Using an Orange Juicer

If you’re using a manual juicer, follow these steps:

Step 1 Gently knead the orange to soften it, then cut it horizontally with a knife and remove any seeds.

Step 2 Place one half of the orange on the juicer’s ridged surface and twist firmly and decisively. Repeat with the other half.

For an electric juicer, follow these steps:

Step 1 Cut off the outer peel and place the halved orange into the juicer.

Step 2 Gently press down on the juicer’s handle to extract the juice.

3. Using an Electric Citrus Juicer

In addition to manual juicers and electric juicers, you can also use an electric citrus juicer, which efficiently extracts juice without requiring much effort and prevents bitterness.

Step 1 Cut the orange in half horizontally. Plug in the juicer, place one half of the orange on the ridged surface, and gently press down.

Note: To avoid overloading the machine, press down for only 5 seconds at a time, then release and wait a moment before pressing again for another 5 seconds, repeating until you’ve extracted all the juice.

Step 2 Once you’re done, unplug the machine and disassemble the parts for cleaning.

4. Squeezing with a Plastic Bottle

There are two methods to try when using a plastic bottle for juicing.

Method 1: Using the Bottle’s Mouth

Step 1 Gently knead the orange to soften it, then cut off the top of the bottle and press it into the orange. Secure the bottle mouth in place with adhesive tape or glue.

Step 2 Using a small knife (like a paper cutter), cut a circular slit on the orange along the inner edge of the bottle mouth. The juice will now easily flow out.

Method 2: Using the Entire Bottle

Step 1 Prepare a large 1.5-liter plastic bottle, a smaller 500ml bottle, a sharp metal rod or skewer, a sharp bamboo skewer, and a knife. Cut the larger bottle in half at the midpoint.

Step 2 Insert the smaller bottle into the cut end of the larger one, then cut the smaller bottle to match the height of the larger bottle.

Step 3 Invert the smaller bottle and use the metal rod to puncture through the layers of plastic. You can now use this setup to extract juice.

5. Using a Glass Cup

Step 1 Choose a glass cup with a faceted or textured base, as this will help with the juicing process.

Step 2 Cut the orange in half lengthwise.

Step 3 Invert the cup and place it in a bowl. Position one orange half over the faceted or textured base of the cup and squeeze until all the juice is extracted.

6. Peeling the Orange Before Squeezing

Bitterness in orange juice is often due to the essential oils found in the peel. To prevent this, try peeling the orange before juicing.

This method reduces the amount of oil that ends up in the juice. Simply use a knife to peel off the outer layer of the orange, then squeeze as usual.

7. Avoid Pressing Too Hard When Using a Juicer

When using an electric juicer or similar tool, avoid applying too much pressure to the white core in the center. If this part gets crushed, it can release more oil from the peel, making the juice bitter.

8. Warming the Oranges

Warming oranges before juicing is a little-known but effective trick to extract more juice without any bitterness.

Step 1 Use a toothpick to gently puncture the peel in a few places, being careful not to go too deep and damage the segments inside.

Step 2 Soak the oranges in hot water for 3-5 minutes to warm them up. Alternatively, place them in a microwave at high heat for about 20 seconds or in an oven at 150°C for 3 minutes.

Step 3 Remove the oranges from the heat and let them cool until you can comfortably handle them. Roll the oranges firmly on a flat surface to soften them further and break down the cell walls.

9. Heating the Orange Juice

If your orange juice has turned bitter due to oil contamination or prolonged exposure to air, you can use a microwave or oven to fix it.

For a microwave, heat the juice at 180°C (medium heat) for about 30 seconds. For an oven, heat the juice at 150°C for 20-30 seconds.
