Sunroof Leak Causes
Leaking sunroofs are mainly caused by weather conditions, as well as the usage and care of the vehicle owner. By design, all sunroofs have similar components: glass, seals, and drainage channels. Thus, during vehicle operation, leaves or debris can easily clog the drainage channels.

As the drainage channels are arranged along the body of the vehicle, when they become clogged, water will flow back inside, causing leakage, dampness, and mold in the interior compartment. In addition to debris and leaves, the hot and humid climate in the country can cause plastic parts or rubber seals to deteriorate, crack, and create gaps, allowing water to seep into the vehicle.
Sunroof Maintenance
– To maintain and clean the sunroof, vehicle owners should prepare soft cloths to remove dust and pick up trash and leaves from the sunroof frame area, preventing clogging. It is also recommended to use a soft brush or wire brush to clean the drainage channels. If possible, consider investing in an air compression system to blow out the seals and pipes.
During the cleaning process, the owner should inspect the seal for any cracks or breaks and replace it if necessary.
– After cleaning, use a specialized lubricant on the mechanical parts of the sunroof, including hinges, sliding rails, and locks. Caring for these mechanical parts will prevent issues like stuck sliding cables and difficulties in opening or closing the sunroof.
– Vehicle owners should also inspect the sunroof glass for any cracks or chips. If there are small cracks, repair them by welding the glass. If the crack is extensive or the glass is broken, replace it immediately to prevent water from seeping into the vehicle’s interior.
– Vehicle owners should proactively test the sunroof’s water resistance by closing it tightly and spraying water on it to check for any leaks. Then, inspect the sunroof’s opening and closing mechanism for smoothness. Also, check the control buttons for accuracy or any unusual behavior. If any issues are detected, repair or replace the necessary parts immediately.
It is advisable to request that the technician clean and maintain the sunroof during each periodic vehicle maintenance check at the dealership. Regular and proper sunroof maintenance and inspections will prevent problems related to water leaks, seepage, and moisture intrusion, ensuring the longevity of the sunroof and the vehicle’s electronic components.
