Currently, leather sofas are still highly favored for use, especially in households with young children or pets. The reason is that leather sofas are very easy to clean, and the leather material is also super durable.
Famous for its timeless beauty, even more beautiful after many years of use. But to achieve that, we need to know how to clean and care for them properly.
According to experts, here is the correct way to clean leather furniture that you may need to refer to:
Here are 10 steps to safely and simply clean leather furniture that you can do yourself:
Step 1: Place a small cloth or towel under the floor
If you are wiping a piece of furniture in your home and do not want water or cleaning agents to spill onto the floor or carpet, do this immediately.
Step 2: Remove dirt and debris
Before you start deep cleaning, remove the crumbs from the surface of the leather (such as dust, debris, or pet hair) by using a handheld vacuum cleaner for the sofa or dusting, wiping debris and letting them fall onto the cloth/towel underneath.
Step 3: Mix cleaning solution
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 1 part distilled water and use this mixture to clean the leather furniture. However, Emma Barton, cleaning expert and founder of The Steam Clean Queen, suggests adding a little lemon extract to the mixture to enhance the cleaning effect.
Step 4: Dip a small fiber cloth in the cleaning solution
After combining the cleaning ingredients, dip a small clean fiber cloth into the solution and squeeze out the excess. After squeezing, the fabric should feel damp, not too wet.
Step 5: Spot test
As with any new cleaning process, you should test the solution on a small area on the sofa’s surface before proceeding with the cleaning process. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes, and if you don’t see any damage or discoloration, you can start cleaning the entire surface with your solution.
Step 6: Clean the leather furniture
In a circular motion, wipe the leather with your small fiber cloth, but do not let the leather get too wet.
Step 7: Wash the cloth as needed
Pay attention to your cloth when cleaning the sofa to avoid accidentally spreading dirt around the furniture. Cleaning professionals also recommend rinsing it in the sink, then using a cleaning agent and squeezing the cloth before starting again. If the cleaning solution looks dirty, pour it down the drain and mix a new concoction before starting again.
Step 8: Dry the leather furniture
Finally, dry the leather surface with another clean and dry small fiber cloth. After this step, your sofa will be clean again.
Step 9: Moisturize
Moisturizing leather products such as Lexol or Poorboy’s Leather Stuff can keep your leather from drying out. When performing this step, you should apply them in a clockwise direction to push the moisturizer deep into the material. This step can also protect your leather furniture.
“For leather sofas exposed to harsh environments such as sunlight, UV-resistant and pH-balanced conditioners will help prevent the leather from drying out and deteriorating.” – Emma Barton said.
Step 10: Protect
Finally, apply a leather protector following the manufacturer’s instructions or where you purchased the sofa. Barton also recommends choosing a product that is oil-free so that you won’t have oil residue on your couch or chairs.
