Don’t think that cooking rice with an electric rice cooker is as simple as plugging it in. Although it’s straightforward, if you don’t know a few small tricks, the rice cooked will not be as delicious as you expect.
Rinsing the rice
People usually pour water into the rice and then squeeze it a few times, and that’s it. However, this method does not retain the nutrients of the rice. When rinsing the rice, first pour water into the pot, stir gently with your hand to let the dirt float to the surface of the water, and then gently pour out that water. Next, pour another round of water, stir gently, and pour out this water as well. That way, you have completed rinsing the rice.
Absolutely do not vigorously rub the rice with your hand because the outer layer of the rice contains many nutrients and is prone to flaking. With this method, when the rice is cooked, you will see a shiny layer on the rice grains, which is the valuable nutrients from the rice.
Soaking the rice before cooking
After rinsing the rice, pour water into the pot and soak it for 30 minutes. Soaking the rice helps it cook faster.
Using a spatula when the rice boils
When you see the rice cooker boiling vigorously and emitting smoke, open the lid and stir the rice evenly with a spatula, then cover the lid again and let the rice cooker continue to boil until the rice is cooked. Regardless of the type of rice you’re cooking, you should do it this way because during the cooking process, the rice grains will stick together, so stirring the rice will distribute the water more evenly and make the rice fluffy.
