According to feng shui expert Nguyen Song Ha (CEO of VNN Feng Shui Company), cleanliness is the most important principle in feng shui to activate positive energy in any living space. Not only at the end of the year, families should regularly clean and tidy up their homes. However, it is important to note that cleaning should not be done on the first few days of the month to avoid dispersing luck.
For each area in the house, the expert suggests the following tips for cleaning the house at the end of the year to avoid feng shui taboos:
Altar area
For Vietnamese people, the altar is always the most sacred and respected place in every family. On every New Year’s occasion, homeowners pay great attention to cleaning and arranging the altar. During the cleaning process, when arranging the altar, the first thing people should do is arrange the incense. The taboo when arranging the incense is to move the incense.
When arranging the incense, people hold the incense steady with one hand and wipe around the incense, wiping from the Twin Dragons Crescent Moon incense burner. If the incense is placed too close to the wall, use a cloth or a wet, clean, washed tissue soaked in five-spice water and wrap it around a thin stick to wipe behind the incense. In addition to the incense, people should also limit moving pictures or statues on the altar.
Before cleaning the altar, people should avoid eating shrimp paste, garlic, dog meat, cat meat, goat meat, turtle, snake, monkey, and avoid drinking tiger balm steeped in snake or tiger bones.
Living room area

On New Year’s occasion, the living room becomes more important as it is the face of the house, where family members gather and friends come to wish the homeowners a happy New Year. Therefore, every family tries to clean up this area and decorate it with appropriate items for the new year to make the house look brighter and more vibrant.
When cleaning the living room, pay attention to clean areas such as the entrance hall, the doorstep, and the window sills to welcome positive energy. The areas for receiving and seeing guests should be decorated with beautiful plant pots and bonsai trees that are suitable for feng shui, with the left side having pine and green plants, and the right side having lucky bamboo plants. In addition, decorative statues, pictures, couplets, and lanterns can be hung to add liveliness and vitality to the house during the Lunar New Year.
If there is a large mirror in the living room, it should be cleaned thoroughly. A large mirror that is dirty and blurred in the living room will create a lot of negative energy and make the space feel cold.
In the Year of the Ox 2021, the representative image is that of buffaloes, but homeowners born in the Year of the Goat should not display buffaloes. In addition, sharp objects and excessively angular decorations such as multi-angle decorative lights, strangely shaped animal figurines should not be displayed in the living room or the main hall during the New Year period.
Workspace
The desk should be placed near a window, where there is a clear view of the outside space, to bring brightness and success to the homeowner’s career. In addition, people should hang positive-themed pictures and have some potted plants on the desk that have auspicious meanings to help the homeowner feel comfortable and reduce stress when working. For example, plants like money trees, peace lilies, azaleas, and golden pothos…
When arranging items on the workspace, follow the principle of the Azure Dragon on the left side of the person sitting by placing stacks of files, papers, books… and the White Tiger on the right side by arranging lower objects, while the middle part of the desk should always be kept clear and clean.
Kitchen
To make the kitchen airy, clean, and feng shui-compliant, homeowners should first avoid hanging sharp objects on the wall such as knives, scissors, graters exposed… These objects invisibly become sharp energy and make the energy in the house deteriorate, causing family members to have disputes and conflicts. It is also important to avoid placing knives directly under the stove or hanging knives behind the cooking area.
Bedroom
The bedroom is the place where family members spend the most time. If everyone’s luck was good in the previous year, they should only clean the bed thoroughly, especially avoiding moving the bed, especially the head of the bed.
On the other hand, if everyone’s luck was not favorable in the previous year, they can lift the entire bed, clean it thoroughly, and then put it back to welcome a better year.
Many people also keep safes in their bedrooms. People often forget to clean the safes, which negatively affects the fortune energy. According to ancient theories, places that store a lot of money and metal energy are where the God of Wealth sleeps at night, so people should only clean the safe in the late afternoon, before 8 pm (do not clean the safe during the day). Inside the safe, avoid placing mythical creatures such as Pixiu, three-legged toads, dragon turtles, kylin… These creatures being trapped in the safe will create negative air for the homeowner.
Feng shui expert Nguyen Song Ha also advises that cleaning the house without violating feng shui principles will bring vitality. A house lacking vitality makes the homeowners feel suffocated and affects their quality of life. Therefore, to increase vitality for the house in the new year, families should decorate with many beautiful plant pots and bonsai trees. In addition to peach trees, apricot trees, and kumquat trees, they can also decorate with golden pothos plants, yellow chrysanthemums, amaryllis flowers, and money plants…
