After more than half a century of fighting against foreign invaders, Vietnam is home to over 4 million veterans who have dedicated their lives to the cause of national liberation and defense.
To honor their wishes, the Politburo and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (6th term) decided to establish the Vietnam Veterans Association on December 6, 1989.

National Resistance Day commemorates President Ho Chi Minh’s call for nationwide resistance. This call charted the course for the resistance war and played a crucial role in the victory at the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954, leading to national independence. On December 22, 1944, the Vietnam Propaganda Liberation Army was established following the instructions of President Ho Chi Minh. This revolutionary army was formed by the people and for the people, fighting for the nation’s idealistic goals. In 1989, by the directive of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the decision of the Government, December 22 was designated as Vietnam People’s Army Day.
