Salt is an essential seasoning in every kitchen as it helps disinfect and clean food during preparation, enhances the flavor of dishes, and offers numerous health benefits such as hydration, mineral replenishment, throat inflammation relief, and muscle pain relief.
In addition to its culinary and medicinal uses, placing a glass of salt water in the bedroom is believed to have other benefits that you may not be aware of.
What is the benefit of placing a glass of salt water in the bedroom?
According to traditional medicine, salt has a salty taste and a cold nature. It helps clear heat, promote digestion, and detoxify. Salt has been used as a seasoning and medicine for centuries.
Saltwater helps detoxify and cool the air, preventing illnesses and promoting longevity. Thus, placing a glass of saltwater in the bedroom helps purify the air and reduce bacteria, creating a healthier environment.
According to Doctor Bùi Đắc Sáng (from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Hanoi Oriental Medicine Association), salt has antibacterial properties. Placing a bowl of salt or a glass of saltwater in the bedroom can improve one’s mood, aid in falling asleep, and enhance sleep quality. Salt purifies the air, creating a cleaner environment that may help alleviate asthma, allergies, and improve lung function and the immune system.
Feng shui practitioners also believe that placing a glass of saltwater by the bedside can ward off negative energy and attract wealth. This belief likely stems from salt’s antibacterial and disease-preventing properties.

Other household tips using salt
Besides the benefits mentioned above, salt has numerous other practical applications in our daily lives:
Cleaning cast iron pots and pans
For cast iron cookware, simply heat the pan, add a little cooking oil and a few spoons of salt, and fry the salt for about 10 minutes. Then, wash the pan with warm water. This method will make your cast iron cookware shiny and clean.
Cleaning the oven
If you’re reluctant to use harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive brushes that may damage your oven, try using salt and cinnamon instead. Sprinkle a mixture of salt and cinnamon inside the oven after each use. This will make it easier to clean food and grease stains.
Cleaning a burnt iron
Over time, the soleplate of an iron can become burnt and stained, causing yellow marks on clothes. To clean these stains, you’ll need wax paper, a cutting board, and salt.
– Lay the wax paper on the cutting board and sprinkle it with about 100g of salt.
– Set the iron to the highest temperature and iron over the salt for a few minutes. Repeat this process a few times to remove the burnt stains from the iron’s soleplate. You’ll be amazed by the results.
Removing coffee stains
Coffee cups and mugs can be challenging to clean due to coffee stains. To tackle this, mix some salt with apple cider vinegar in the cup, let it soak for 15 minutes, and then rinse with clean water. This will effectively remove the coffee stains.
