The practice of ‘coining’ or ‘gua sha’ is a folk remedy that, while not conventional, is accepted in traditional Oriental medicine. It is believed that when one experiences a cold, headache, stuffy nose, or stiff neck, these symptoms correspond to different organ systems. The treatment aims to regulate qi (energy flow) and harmonize blood circulation.
Based on this understanding, coining or gua sha along the bladder meridian has a holistic effect on the body, strengthening healthy qi and expelling pathogenic factors to enhance overall bodily functions.
Apart from coining and gua sha, traditional practitioners may also employ techniques such as massage, kneading, rolling, acupressure, or cupping on the back to achieve similar therapeutic effects in treating similar ailments.

As for the reason why silver, specifically, is used instead of other metals for coining, there are a few specific reasons:
Firstly, when one is fatigued, there is an increased presence of sulfur compounds in the body. Silver reacts with these sulfur compounds to form a black compound (Ag2S). The blackening of the silver indicates the presence and amount of sulfur, signifying the level of fatigue in the body. As the toxic compounds are drawn out (by using silver), the body recovers and regains its vigor.
However, in some cases, yellow-red or gray-green colors may appear due to the reaction of fats and oils on the skin with the silver. Using silver for coining is also a way to absorb these undesirable compounds into the silver.
Secondly, silver has antibacterial properties, which is why it was traditionally used for food storage, especially by royalty. Even today, aluminum foil is used to wrap food.
Regarding the use of egg whites, when one has a cold, the pores are more dilated (due to friction). Egg whites are used to seal the pores and prevent further entry of pathogenic factors into the body.
