As you ascend, the air becomes drier and your body loses more water, which can make you feel uncomfortable and nauseous. Therefore, it is important to stay hydrated. Many people find it confusing when they are advised not to drink tea and coffee on airplanes, as these beverages are convenient and provide a sense of alertness.

Why should you not order tea and coffee on an máy bay?

Many people choose coffee and tea to stay awake during air travel. However, according to revelations from flight attendants, these are the beverages that should not be ordered when flying.

Some studies have shown that drinks on airplanes can pose serious health risks. Tea and coffee have been warned to be not hygienic. Many flight attendants also restrict drinking these two beverages during the flight.

Why should you not order tea and coffee on an airplane? The issue is not the tea or coffee itself, but the water source on the plane.

A 2019 study found that many international airlines, including US airlines, use low-quality or unhealthy tap water and that the water for tea or coffee on the flight is taken from the tap instead of bottled water.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has tested water from airlines in 2012 and found that 12% of the samples tested positive for E.coli bacteria. If tea and coffee are brewed with this water source, users can be affected while flying.

Another reason why people are advised not to order tea and coffee on airplanes is that coffee on airplanes does not taste as good as on the ground. At high altitudes, the low pressure in the cabin will cause the water to boil at 90 degrees Celsius instead of 100 degrees Celsius, making the coffee difficult to drink. These pre-made teas and coffees are often not intended to be used with low-temperature water.

In fact, for many people, enjoying a cup of coffee while flying overnight is worthwhile because it helps keep their minds awake and allows them to complete unfinished tasks. However, for passengers with weak immune systems and prone to motion sickness, consuming beverages with high caffeine content like tea and coffee can affect sleep and cause fatigue. That is why you should not order tea and coffee on an airplane.

Beverages that should be consumed on airplanes

Below are the beverages that experts recommend using on long-haul flights.

Filtered water

Filtered water is the best drink for passengers while flying. You should drink it to replenish your body’s water supply. At altitudes of thousands of meters, your body will lose a lot of water because the humidity is only from 10% to 20%. According to estimates, on a 10-hour flight, you can lose from 1.6 to 2 liters of water – about 4% of the body’s water content.

If you don’t drink enough water, you will feel tired and have a headache. However, to ensure hygiene, you should choose bottled water instead of drinking the available water or water taken from the tap on the plane.

Club Soda (sparkling water with added minerals)

Many people need carbonated drinks to overcome fatigue, discomfort, or to stay awake while flying. However, carbonated drinks are the “devil” of long-haul passengers because they often cause dehydration. Therefore, instead of drinking normal carbonated water, you should drink Club Soda.

Beverages to avoid when traveling by plane
It is best to avoid or limit the following beverages when traveling by plane.

Faucet water

As mentioned above, water taken directly from the faucets on airplanes may not be hygienic. In 2019, New York University conducted a study on many US airlines and found that the clean water samples taken from airplanes were not safe to use.

Juice and sugary soda

Consuming sugary drinks such as juice and coca, especially on long-haul flights, can lead to headaches and nausea.

Alcoholic beverages

Experts always recommend passengers to avoid drinking too much beer or alcohol on airplanes unless they want to lose water in their bodies. If you really crave it, you should also drink less and not enjoy it as freely as you would at home.
