Since ancient times, our ancestors have placed great importance on trees in feng shui. They also have many folklore stories revolving around the image of trees, which hold significant meanings in human life and society. One of these sayings is: “If there are only three trees in front of the house, don’t be afraid of frogs entering.” So, what exactly are these three trees?
Why aren’t frogs afraid to enter the house?
Although frogs may appear unkempt and ugly, according to ancient beliefs, they are often seen as symbols of luck and prosperity, similar to the image of bats. This explains why in the past, many families considered the entry of frogs into the house as a good omen, hoping for prosperity and wealth.
However, these three types of trees, although familiar, should not be planted in front of the house:
Bayberry tree
The bayberry tree is often associated with the meaning of grief and loss in East Asian cultures, especially in Chinese and Vietnamese cultures. This originates from the phonetic similarity between the word “bay” and the words “pain” or “mourning” in Chinese-Vietnamese, creating a strong linguistic association with negative connotations. Folk beliefs suggest that planting bayberry trees in front of the house can bring about unfortunate events, even funeral rites for the homeowner.
Willow tree
In folklore, the willow tree is often associated with the image of separation and sorrow. Willows have slender leaves that sway in the wind, creating an image of gentle yet profound separation. In some East Asian myths, willow trees are even considered as trees that guide the souls of the deceased back to the otherworld. Therefore, planting willow trees in front of the house is regarded as a sign of separation, loss, or even death.
Jackfruit tree
According to some feng shui experts, planting jackfruit trees in the garden symbolizes unity and harmony. It is also believed to represent perseverance, tranquility, and wisdom. However, jackfruit trees are not recommended to be planted in front of the house.
Jackfruit trees can grow tall with a wide canopy, requiring ample space for growth. Planting jackfruit trees in the garden is more suitable. The tree will have enough space for growth, blooming, and fruiting. Planting jackfruit trees in front of the house will limit the space for their development. Moreover, jackfruit trees shed many leaves, making it more difficult for homeowners to clean up. Overgrown jackfruit trees can also block sunlight from entering the house, making it gloomy and chilly.
