Transferring to a new high school is a common occurrence for a variety of reasons, and it is important to be well-prepared with the necessary paperwork and knowledge of the regulations. Let’s explore the requirements and procedures for transferring schools, specifically focusing on the context of Vietnamese high school students.
1 Transfer Requirements and Regulations for High School Students
For Domestic Students
According to the regulations on school transfers and student enrollment in high schools, as well as Decision No. 51/2002/QD-BGD&DT, there are two main conditions under which a high school student can transfer schools:
- The student’s place of residence changes as they move with their parents or guardians.
- The student has special circumstances or valid reasons that necessitate a school transfer.
For Vietnamese Students Returning from Overseas
Vietnamese students who have been studying and living abroad and wish to return to Vietnam to continue their high school education must meet the following requirements:
Educational Requirements: Students must hold a certificate or diploma that is equivalent to a lower secondary school graduation diploma in Vietnam. If a student has previously studied in Vietnam and then moved abroad, they must present the diploma for the level they completed in Vietnam upon their return.
Age and Curriculum Requirements:
- Vietnamese citizens returning from overseas will be granted a one-year age extension beyond the regular age limit for the high school level.
- In terms of curriculum, students must have studied natural sciences up to a level equivalent to the educational program in Vietnam. Additionally, they need to acquire and reinforce essential knowledge in social sciences to align with the educational program in Vietnam.
- For students currently enrolled in a high school program overseas who wish to continue their studies at the equivalent level in Vietnam, a confirmation letter from their current school is required. They will also undergo an assessment to determine their academic level according to the regulations.
Parents and students need to be well-prepared before initiating the school transfer process
2 Transfer Procedure for High School Students
The process of transferring to a new high school is quite stringent and requires the involvement of parents or guardians. Here are the steps to follow:
Step 1: Parents/guardians of the student must submit a transfer request to the principal of the school to which the student wishes to transfer (using a standard form).
Upon receipt, the principal will provide feedback on the transfer request, with two possible outcomes:
If the school agrees to the transfer, the principal will sign and accept the request.
If the school disagrees, they will provide specific reasons and return the transfer request to the parents.
Step 2: Parents/guardians must also submit a transfer request to the principal of the student’s current school. The principal will then consider the request, assist in withdrawing the student’s academic records and dossier, and issue a transfer letter.
Step 3: Parents/guardians of the student need to submit the transfer dossier to the Department of Education and Training’s management and information unit in the province/city.
Step 4: The Department of Education will review, process, and approve the transfer request. Afterward, parents will receive the confirmed dossier and submit it to the principal of the new school.
The transfer procedure is rigorous and complex, so students need to be well-prepared
3 Timeline for High School Transfer Process
Understanding the timeline for the transfer process is crucial as it directly impacts the student’s academic journey. Except for special cases, the regulations specify two periods each year for processing high school transfer requests: at the beginning of the academic year (from August 10 to September 10) and in the middle of the year (from January 15 to January 30).
- The designated time for submitting transfer requests is Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM.
- The expected time to receive the results of the transfer request is one week after submitting the dossier.
Pay attention to the timeline to avoid any delays or complications!
