Kidney function in toddlers is not fully developed and only reaches adult levels after the age of three. This means that the filtering capacity of a toddler’s kidneys is only two-thirds that of an adult. At this stage, the kidneys cannot handle excess salt, leading to kidney damage and, in severe cases, cardiovascular and blood pressure issues.

Avoid adding salt to toddler’s meals

Adding salt to a toddler’s meal does not make it tastier but rather too salty as children have more taste buds than adults, which can lead to picky eating. Toddlers under 12 months only need 1 gram of salt per day, and this amount is already present in their formula and fruits, so there is no need to add extra salt to their food.

2Sugar

Avoid sugar for children under two years old

According to the latest annual dietary guidelines from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), children under two years of age should not consume any type of sugar to prevent obesity and chronic diseases in the future.

Previous research indicates that, on average, infants consume one teaspoon of sugar per day, while toddlers consume about six teaspoons daily.

Foods high in sugar

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommends reducing sugar intake from various food sources such as sweetened desserts, sweet snacks, and sugary drinks. By limiting these foods in a toddler’s diet, you can significantly reduce their sugar consumption.
