1 How to Tell if Lemonade is Sweet Enough Without Tasting

This method works for regular lemonade or lemonade made from lemons.

Let’s try this experiment! First, put the lemon seeds into a glass and add water. Stir the mixture. Pay attention to the seeds in the water; you will see them sinking to the bottom of the glass.

Next, add sugar to the glass and stir until it is completely dissolved. At this point, the seeds will no longer be at the bottom of the glass; they may be floating in the liquid or have risen to the surface.

Lemonade with the right amount of sweetness will have floating seeds

Lemonade that is too sweet will have seeds that rise to the top

From this experiment, we can conclude that:

  • Sour lemonade: seeds sink to the bottom.
  • Sweet lemonade: Seeds float to the top.
  • Perfectly balanced lemonade: seeds float in the middle of the glass.

The explanation for this is simple. When you add sugar, it changes the specific gravity of the water. Since Archimedes’ buoyant force depends on the specific gravity of the water, we can observe that:

  • If no sugar is added, the seeds sink to the bottom of the glass because P>FA
  • If a moderate amount of sugar is added and dissolved, the seeds float in the water because P=FA
  • If a large amount of sugar is added and dissolved, the seeds float to the surface because P<>
