A cast-iron skillet is a versatile tool that can help you cook a variety of delicious dishes quickly and conveniently. However, cleaning and maintaining it can be a challenge. The buildup of rust and grime can affect both the aesthetics and performance of your skillet.

This article will provide you with a quick and easy guide to cleaning your cast-iron skillet and keeping it in top condition. Let’s get started!

What You’ll Need:

– Fine salt

– Cooking oil (vegetable or olive oil)

– 1 potato

Instructions

This process can be a bit messy, so it’s recommended to lay down some newspaper or a large piece of paper to catch any salt or oil spills.

– Step 1: Pour a generous amount of salt into the skillet. For a 12-inch skillet, you may need about half a cup of salt or more.

– Step 2: Cut the potato in half so that it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

– Step 3: Place the cut side of the potato onto the salt and start scrubbing.

Hold the potato vertically and avoid rolling it around. Scrub the pan in a circular motion, applying moderate pressure.

The moisture from the potato will help remove the rust.

– Step 4: Continue scrubbing the sides, rim, and bottom of the skillet. Don’t forget to scrub the handle as well.

The salt will get dirty quickly. Depending on the condition of your skillet, you may need to rinse and repeat this process with fresh salt until the skillet is shiny and rust-free.

– Step 5: Once the skillet is clean, rinse it with water and dry it thoroughly. Place the skillet on low heat for a minute or two to ensure complete dryness.

– Step 6: After the skillet is dry, pour a small amount of oil into it and use a paper towel to rub it all over the surface. Use a clean paper towel to wipe away any excess oil.

– Step 7: Keep the skillet on low heat for 30 minutes.

– Step 8: Once the skillet has cooled down, wipe away any remaining oil before storing it away.

Tips for Maintaining Your Cast-Iron Skillet

1. Clean with Warm Water

After cooking, soak your skillet in warm water to soften any food residue. This will make cleaning much easier.
